Valmet 308 and steel case ammo

I was out shooting my Valmets and would suggest to anybody with a 308 version to NOT use steel cased ammo.

2 of my rifles would tear the rim off leaving the steel case stuck. I only tried 1 round in M76-Hunter and M78 but that was enough for me.


Not sure if anybody else has has similar results so it could just be my luck.

Me and TooTall were shooting copper washed steel case in his 308 Valmet and it worked flawlessly.

Put a few of those aside for me to try. It could just be the MTS stuff I had.

Was yours MFS or Norinco? We were shooting Norinco.

All I've ever shot is Norc 308 out of my M78 and that's probably around a 1000rds. Not one ftf or separated case.

Ya, MFS was the junk.

I'll buy some Norc and try it.

Have you tried the Hornady Steel Match yet? My RFB seems to really like it, 200 rds and counting with no issues and you know how finicky they can be.

No I haven't but thank for the suggestion.

I don't normally shoot steel case because I reload but these Valmets can be a little rough on brass.

So is my RFB and why I started trying new things with it. I have a Hornady LnL AP that I haven't used yet waiting for the new house to be built so I started using more off the shelf ammo. MFS is not even available in my area but I found the Hornady Steel match (50 round) box for $45 taxes in.
