I was wondering what the difference between a valmet and say a Romanian
ak-47 is?. They look similar but Valmets are non restricted and Ak's are prohibited. Are the receivers that much different?. How about parts interchangeabilty?. Anyone lead me in the right dirrection to a site etc.
Thanks

The non-restricted vs prohibited classifications have nothing to do with differences in the receivers, parts, etc. Do NOT look for any logic or common sense in these determinations.

The Valmets are exempted from the prohibition because they are made by Valmet, in Finland, and in .223 and .308 calibre they were considered to have a valid use for hunting. I don't know what mechanical and construction differences they may have, but those are not the relevant issues on their being non-restricted ... it is based solely on the name of the company that made them.

This is why you cannot build an AK and register it as a Valmet. It's only a Valmet if it is made by Valmet, in Finland.

Oh, and did I mention that the people who've made these laws are hypocritical asshats?

Some Valmets are non-restricted, others are prohibited. I've heard a story that a quantity was supplied to aboriginal hunters by the gov't, and this was a factor in the reclassification as non-restricted. Have also heard that Valmet complained to the gov't. There is little difference between a non-restrictedValmet sporting AK and a prohibited Saiga. Incidentally one of the non-restricted Valmet variants has a very politically incorrect paramilitary appearance. You must rmember that primary qualification of the good folks who made up these rules was fundamental ignorance, apart from a generalized dislike for firearms and their owners.

all valmets are made from either a milled reciever or an RPK thickness stamped steel version. AK's could be milled, .5mm stamped steel or car fenders. the valmet are considered the 'cadilac's' of AK's. the first galils were actually made from valmet rifles.

there are some other small differences, like the way the handguards are attached, the gas tube isn't fixed on a valmet, stocks, sight are have tritium inserts.

the best part is that the only difference between a M71(prohib) and a M78(nonrestricted) is the buttstock style and the barrel length

Thanks, I kind of thought there was no real reason why some are prohibited and some are non restricted. In the prohibited part of the ak's It states "looks like" an ak-47. One valmet I saw forsale looked like an ak-47.Then so does the cz 858-2 and the krinker plinker kit.
I am wondering if I bought an expensive Valmet if Ak parts were interchangable as they are fairly cheap across the boarder if they'll let them to be imported.
Thanks for the imput, the more the marrier

you can import valemts. the nonrestricted kind anyways. trigger and bolt parts usually fit but there are serious issues with mags. they are $100+USD, any only valmet mags fit. you can modify some AK mags but it is tricky

Hmmm, difference between a Valmet and an AK - about $2200, and a whole lot of quality. Also as mentioned the magazines.

as mentioned above some may have been supplied by the gov't to indigenous peoples up north to replace aging/abused Lee-Enfields...hence the non-restricted status...
