I have just found three good used 5/30 rd 5.56 mags for the AK84-S. These are steel. These will work with the Galil and Valmet, may require some fitting to the attaching lugs, very hard to find these days. Price is $95 each plus shipping and tax.

They'll fit in a Valmet M78 with "some fitting".... hours and hours of work with a file and/or dremel. Not sure if they feed though, as I haven't actually tried using the one I worked on.
 
I have used these manufacture mags with very minor fitting in a pair of Galil rifles that I used to own and a customers Valmet, but that was years ago and I do not remember how much fitting was required to fit the Valmet. From experience there can be big differences from rifle to rifle and mag to mag due to varying manufactures tolerances, but basically they are the same pattern.
 
DO NOT USE THESE IN A VALMET.

They may fit, and lock in with "some fitting", but the feed angle is wrong and they WILL cause the bullets to jam deeper into the case, which can increase pressure dramatically and cause your Valmet to kaboom.
 
G3 / HK91 cheap magazines and almost untraceable in the country would be appreciated by the owners of Valmet 78 7,62X51 cal. because easily adaptable with some fiting
 
It's constructive and an interesting track, the M14 magazines are easy to get in the country, but is there a source for the Galils?
 
John has the capacity to bring in Galil kits & mags from the same source of the m14 rifles (I think). Galil market is a lot smaller though....

If I could get a kit I’d convert my M-88 to a 762x51 galil but finding the kit is all but impossible

I have a soft spot for the Galil, I think she is one of the worlds best (dare I say it) assault rifle. Years ago OGT had a bunch of surplus (read scrap) Galil SAR I had a lot of fun with them, this was back it the days when we could hunt Gophers and Coyotes with them.

To bring in Galil parts kits would simply not be cost effective given the small market and high cost. We have to pay to get receivers cut and mags pinned, not easy when as controlled items they can not be sent to a local machine shop with out a Police escort. No I simply don't see this happening.

I know of a warehouse full of surplus rifles including M1 Garands but given todays "picky" customers and the high costs, not to say gamble involved, these will not surface any time soon. But one day? who knows! :) :)
 
Not meaning to dump in a dealer thread yet as I see it, this could be a safety issue and is worth speaking about.

Polytech .223 AK mags can work and be Safe in a Valmet with Minor fitting but NOT Norinco .223 AK mags.

Polytech seems to share a similar same feed angle with Valmet, but are different than Galil, and Norinco different again.

Compare the mag lugs, and latches on them all and it becomes obvious.

Norinco mags do not come close to locking in without major work and if you do manage to get that done, good luck correcting the feed angle. I wrecked a couple mas trying.

Galil .223 mags will lock into a Valmet nicely, but when the bolt comes forward and strips a round from the mag, the bullet often gets driven into the barrel face and pushes the bullet deeper into the case before in gets chambered. This will cause a overpressure condition apon firing and can hurt your gun and or self real bad.

You are not dumping in a dealer thread, as has been said this type of mag needs to be hand fitted. These mags are all of the same general type but I have seen lots of variation, generally speaking the feed lips are thick steel and very rough, there is enough material to allow hand fitting of the lips to correct feeding angle and bolt clearance. The first Galil rifles were manufactured from Finish Valmet receiver's. Any time a round fails to feed correctly and gets pushed into the case an over pressure situation can occur often with bad results.

Out of curiosity whats would you say is a rough price point for SAR kits? Could they be chopped up before import and brought in as parts rather than prohibs?

It would really put my airsoft clone over the top if I could replace the sh!tty front sight and top cover with the originals, along with battle worn furniture and a real stock. I'm sure there are people that would love to retrofit their Valmets as well

The real problem is quantity, we simply can't move a large enough quantity to even begin to negotiate a good price. They would have to be chopped before import and that gives the exporter the excuse to jack up the price some more. That is assuming we can get an Import Cert, which would be required, now DFAIT will ask the RCMP SFSS to approve how the receiver is cut. It goes on and on. I am guessing that we would need to order at least 500 to make this happen, how many would we sell? Maybe 10! I am also guessing that the price after all this would be approx. $800, I don't believe they would sell.

We did this with the M14 kits, my profit on that deal is all tied up in M14 parts kits in our warehouse and sales have fallen off to near zero, with hindsight I miss judged the market and over ordered. When you allow for some lost parts and sub standard barrels that exercise was not very smart.

Always looking for interesting projects but I don't think this one will fly!

you should have added a few Galil kits into the M14 order... prob not how it works but might have been the only way to get this done....

On another Note...

SAKO &/or Metso owns the name Valmet. Any chance of paying them a royalty and producing 'Valmets' here under license ?

it would be easy money for them....

If I remember correctly the AK47 and variants were prohibited by OIC (Order In Council) the Valmet was included as a named variant. An objection was raised because the Valmet was used in a lot of Northern communities and another OIC was passed removing the Valmet (Specific models only) from the first list of AK variant's. To start manufacture now and argue that this last OIC should apply to new production would be a huge gamble. Could production re-start for a model that hasn't been manufactured for many years and be accepted and approved by the SFSS? based on past experience this is not something I am prepared to gamble on. The SFSS will not answer hypothetical questions so no chance of getting a decision first. How big is the market here for new Valmets? Would they retail at $750.00? Not likely with todays cost the market is just not there to give huge production numbers and lower the cost to a reasonable level. Lots of people before today have researched this. No I think we are better to wait for new designs.

I can answer this one :)

CanadaAmmo has already tried this, and Beretta (who owns SAKO) is not interested...

Even if they were, i highly doubt that anyone in Canada would be able to produce a brand new Valmet for less than the originals go for. A milled receiver Valmet would be significantly more difficult to manufacture than something like a BCL102. Based on the price of BCL102 and compareable new rifles, i doubt anyone would be able to make and sell Valmets in small quantity for less than $2500-3000. And thats before any royalties to Beretta. And on top of the price, the quality would likely be nowhere near the originals. So in other words, no one would buy them. Certainly not enough people to justify the effort.

In addition to that, if someone was to set up large scale Valmet production in Canada, im pretty sure an OIC would quickly follow to prohibit them. The only reason they fly under the radar now is due to their price and rarity.
