I have a valmet hunter in .308 I am converting to a Galil ARM. Parts kit is about to come in, as well as an ak trigger group and I need to whack this thing together. The only thing I am stuck on is attaching the stock... I have been thinking, I could cut off the round part that goes into the receiver and weld it right to the receiver, weld around the receiver to build up the material then grind and file to spec of a galil, drill and put the roll pin through to make it appear it is pinned in place like a galil. This I want to be my last resort option. Anyone have any way to attach the folding stock? Or tips for completing the build? I also need to have the gas block removed, handguard retainer put on, new ARM gas block added and the barrel cut, and threaded. Any competent gunsmiths near the GTA?

The Valmet receiver is heat treated. Doing all this welding/building up metal will ruin the temper of the metal. I would not do it, especially on a .308. Unless, of course, you plan on heat treating it again after welding is completed.

The BEST way to attach the stock would be to mill an adapter that slides onto the back of the Hunter receiver (in the same manner that the original Hunter stock does) and has a round hole in the back for the galil stock. Yes, it will slightly increase the OAL, but its much better than welding a heat treated receiver..

IF you decided to go ahead with all the welding, then why weld the stock on?! Why not just build up some metal, and machine the back of the receiver to be exactly like Galil's?

I am currently going over my options now, I will probably look into getting an adapter made, just have to figure out who would make one?

Anyone with a milling machine and a moderate amount of experience on it... Doesn't have to be a gunsmith. Being in GTA, that isn't difficult to find.

Best bet is talk to Dlask. I had them do some work on 1 of my valmets before.
The guys are good with these rifles and have done several valmet mods for a handful of guys on this board already

I have a 308 Valmet hunter Galil clone. I can snap some pics and send them your way. Best to enlighten me on how i can post them here or i can email/text them. Its a pretty solid stock setup. It might be not be for a week unless i luck out and have a bit of spare time tomorrow before setting off out of town for the next few days for work.
Oh ya, as far as Dlask goes, i've had 2 Valmets worked on there, and the work was amazing. It took around a year or so turnaround time each, but their work is well worth the wait imho. That being said, when i went there to pick up the last one, Leigh said that my Valmet was the last one they will ever work on. He explained to me that the oneoff custom work required them to change tooling on their machines and is diffucult to justify the downtime and cost which would otherwise be already setup for production work. They got one from Fireball and mine done at the same time to help make it more efficient. Or maybe since i live right by there I just annoyed them too much to want to deal with me anymore :p

Jason, if you don't mind learning autocad (or similar) you can design the front part of the hinge yourself and then any machine shop will manufacture one for you.

Or, and I'm loath to suggest it, you can also take the front part of the hinge from the galil stock, cut off the part that fits inside the receiver (you will need to make sure you get the angle correct - it won't be a straight 90deg cut) then drill it for the single stock bolt valmet uses. Cutting a notch into the front part of the hinge should also help. Then whatever empty space remains on the valmet receiver can be filled with a 3d printed plastic spacer. I did something similar to fit a zhukov stock on my valmet and I could help you out with this last part (spacer) since I already have most of the design.

Pic for those who haven't seen it :p
