So for the past while I have been drooling over valmets and the thought of converting one into a galil clone or just getting one that someone else built. So I need help to figure out which valmet would be best for the conversion. My preferred caliber is .308 for this build. I also need to figure out what peices I need to get to convert the valmet into the galil to make as exact as a copy as possible

I sold a 7.62x51 Valmet M78 and a complete 7.62x51 Galil SAR kit to a guy on CGN a few years ago and he built an almost identical clone. Hopefully he posts some pics

I think I've posted on that subject before. It's easier to say what you can keep ;) To stay non-restricted you can only try to duplicate the Galil Sniper or ARM because of barrel length. If you are ok with a restricted version, remember that you can't cut a barrel below 18.6" - you have to get a new one made...

You are better off starting with a hunter. M78 has that heavy barrel that I don't believe fits in the Galil handguard (cutting that barrel would be a shame too while the hunter is already at 20" - matches the sniper version).

Looking from the back of the rifle:

A Galil stock won't fit. You will need a stock and an adapter to make it attach.

You will need a receiver cover with the rear sight - either a galil or a valmet one will fit.

You will need a recoil spring guide rod with a latch - a galil, valmet or even ak one will fit.

You will need a galil bolt carrier or butcher the original bolt carrier to make it match the galil.

You will need a galil pistol grip and trigger guard

You will need a galil, valmet or even ak trigger

You will need a galil selector

You will need galil handguards

You will need a galil or valmet front sight base (keep the base/gas block - it will fit unless you want the bipod - then you need the original gas block)

You will need galil handguards and mounting brackets

Here's a diagram https://iwi.us/iwi/media/products/GALIL_5-56-1.jpg

You can keep the receiver, bolt, barrel (need to thread and possibly cut), and gas tube maybe the gas block if you don't want to have a bipod

Awesome thanks, Ill kepe my eyes open for this stuff

On a similar note, I'm converting my valmet m78 to an m76 clone and I want to put the original folding tube stock on it but it seems to be impossible to find. Am I searching for unicorn feathers here?

I bought a brand new M78 in .308 years and years ago, and sold it maybe 5 years ago for a considerable amount of money. If you want a hobby, fine, but you might want to stop and think about the market value of a perfectly good M78 converted to look like (or partially/kinda looks like) something else. You might think it is interesting but will you find a buyer that will pay the amount of money you will have invested in this project?

To each his own...

My career is based around firearms, I dont buy things to sell a few months later

Not gonna lie, I would pay quite a bit of money for a nicely done Galili ARM or Valmet M76 clone. I passed up on ones in the past and I'm kicking myself now. The market of potential buyers is smaller, but there is a market.
