Do it.

Hows the quality ?

Arguably Valmet made the best AK's ever.

Whats it worth (with scope and rings)?

Depends the scope, depends the caliber, depends the condition.

Is it possible to change butt and fore stock to AK style ?

Not without alot of work and gunsmithing when a Valmet M78 is available in the exchange right now for 2100$

Unless you are looking at a different one, the Valmet in the EE is a Hunter. If it is a M78 I am in.

Converting to a pistol grip is not too hard, but the hunters are beautiful as is. I would strongly reccomend not changing them, or at least if you do, take your time and do it right so it is not a bubba job.

The hunter I had was a nice rifle. The wood, finish, etc was all very well done. Accuracy was on par with a m305. The irons on the hunters are neat.

I've had a Hunter in 308, great rifle! I don't think you'll find much under $1000... depending on condition. Check the barrel, I've seen some that were shot-out.

Fit and finish was excellent on mine. Magazines are hard to come buy and pretty darn expensive. How expensive, how about $200 expensive... Converting them to a pistol grip configuration shouldn't be that much work.

Wow, I remember when I had a chance to buy a nice Valmet Hunter .308 for $700. Just didn't have the cash at the time.:(

sure. Why not?

I had one in 308 for a while, and found the irons quite good. It also worked quite well with a scope.

If you actually want to hunt with a 308 semi, why not buy a m305, and 1500 worth of hunting ammo to practice with though?

I found the 2 to be similar in a number of ways. The 305 may have had a slight edge on accuracy, or it may have just been the loads I was using. The hunter was much nicer to look at, had better sights for the bush (in my opinion), and felt lighter.

I would like a non-restricted black/green rifle in a calibre that you could realistically hunt with. I love my Swiss Arms Classic Green but the only thing I'm not happy with is the calibre - if only it was in .308. I can justify it with myself having a rifle like this if its in a calibre I could take deer hunting or something. I probably sound crazy - but I thought of the Valmet as an alternative. I've considered the M305 but for some reason its never apealed to me, just something about it I don't like.

I have an M78 in 308 (the RPK config). Accuracy is quite good. It has a big heavy barrel and a very stiff reciever. I was getting 2 inches or so with IVI ball ammo at 100 meters and I am not much of a rifle shot.

I was wondering about these rifles - its too bad they're so expensive. Heard they are limited in their accuracy by the AK action?

Here's a site where I was reading about it.

http://www.valmet.org/valmethunter.htm

Looks like you could mount a scope on one too.

AK actions are not the deciding factor in accuracy, the tolerances on the rifle action and barrel are. The Swiss Sporting rifles are pretty much built on AK type actions (highly refined ones), and they shoot respectably well.

Ah yes I remember reading something about that on here a long time ago redleg. Maybe even a web page about "What makes an accurate rifle". The Chamber, The Bullet, Ammunition, Bedding, Optics / Sights, The Trigger, The Stock, The Barrel, The Action, ect.

Hunter 243

I have been considering a Hunter but I would prefer the Hunter be in 243. I have not seen one for sale in 243, anyone have one in the safe that they are not using?

I am a loving gun owner....

I've heard a few comments about people not being satisfied with the accuracy of the rifle - I wonder if that can be remedied?
Anything accuracy problem can be remedied with the right amount of money.
