currently importing some. My issue is the FRT has made the M88 prohibited while the Valmet Hunter is exempt.

I cant for the life of me find a difference.

Any help would be appreciated so I dont get something turned around at the border.

Are you doing the import paperwork yourself? Then I assume you already have the import permit and will just need to show the right FRT printout to CBSA at the port of entry.

If you have an importer engaged, remind them to use the correct FRT reference.

I always thought the M88 and the hunter were one and the same. [sarcasm]Apparently not.[/s]

Sadly the only differences are the safety and sights.

Hunter has AK style safety and no barrel mounted front sight
M88 has cross bolt style safety and a front sight on the barrel.

Ask the RCMP why one is gtg and the other is prohibo....

Do you know if the the M88 even specifically stamps M88 on the firearm? I have been zooming in on pictures and can't find any indicator

Norinco made a Hunter type rifle and it is prohibited because the RCMP used the ATF list of prohibited foreign made firearms that could be imported into America.

Not true,

As valmet tuner was specifically named as an exception to the Ak family due to having "large numbers" purchased by feds for northern communities.

Excellent. Thanks for the info I see it now. When purchasing I can make sure there is no barrel mounted front sight. Thanks for the clarification.

Can you prove that in any way? We've all heard that story, but I've never seen any actual proof that The government supplied these rifles to first nations, and this story has been cast into doubt by other members here.

Yes we know its exempted. That doesn't explain WHY though.

I just assumed "northern communities" meant first Nations.

ive read more on the function in cold temperatures and tolerances being of Finnish origin.

after a CGN search of the word Valmet i found a thread from this year, https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...-anomaly?highlight=hunting,+valmet,+exemption.

in the FRT it apparently stated it. No guarantee the RCMP havent scrubbed info from it by now but it at one time did say it.

I dont see it on the armalitics entry

The absence of the AK style safety is the biggest and easiest to see, the cross mounted safety behind the trigger is a lil harder to see
