Value disparity between the Type 81M Underfolders and the Fixeds? Fear of the new?

What gives with this? I'd wanted to get a fixed and an underfolder but the fixeds are sold out and they're being flogged on GP for almost, sometimes more than, double what they retailed for. Looking at it it looks like they sold out almost instantly and it's been weeks now and the under folders are still in stock? I love the look of the underfolders and I'd like to get a pair of them seeing as that's what's left but why aren't they nearly anywhere close to as sought after? Definitely makes me hesitant about getting one, surely people have their reasons? I've handled the old CZ858 side folder and I liked the steel stock quite a bit. The whole thing just makes me feel like the under folder will never hold its value over time and people consider the fixeds to be better? Is it just because the under folder can't take aftermarket stocks? Have the underfolders been found to have an unreliable folding mechanism or something? Are people just hesitant to try a new mechanism worried they might not have good longevity?

Sorry if this has been beat to death, I haven't seen this discussed anywhere in the other Type 81 threads. Why are used fixeds $2000 and the underfolders still in stock??? I haven't seen any review really say anything bad about them. Just confused, they look awesome and they fold with a mag in! Why does nobody want them?

I wished to get the fixed stock but they sold so fast so i have to wait the next shipment. The underfolder look cool and that's it. I am not a fan of folding stock at first, even if the side folder Type 81 are reputed to be very solid. I much preffer the look of the fixed stock even if the way you have to put cheek on the stock to get a good sight picture isnt the best. Still my favorite is the LMG version, the stock feel very good. The underfolder isnt appealling to me and i think for me would sucks bad.

Supply and demand. Tactical Imports brought in a lot fewer full stock type 81's because they knew the underfolder were going to be much more popular. I personally wouldn't spend that much money on either rifle for what people are selling them on ####### for, and I have some disposable income. I just don't see the value. So get one while they last.

For the price of the rifle. They are amazing, even with people nit picking about every little thing. The underfolder as of now is my favorite firearm in my whole collection from the time I started in the hobby. The only thing better would be an early Russian AK47 Full Auto collector grade or a Yugo Full Auto AK.

The fixed are simply sold out because less of them came in, and therefore high demand low supply is already taking effect on those models. When the underfolders sell out they as well will naturally go up in price on the used market. Altho I think they wont go as high as the fixed because the fixed are a far more diverse rifle when it comes to aftermarket mods.

I personally think the Underfolder M's dont look as nearly good as the fixed. They have a super boxy back end look due the pivot point being lower in relation to the receiver compared to AKMS. They shouldve figured out a way to move it up half an inch. Installing a cheek pad may help to balance out the look.

I bought both and let me tell you I didn’t think I’d like the under folder but I do. The cheek weld on the fixed stock is super uncomfortable for me and with a bit of rise and padding on the under folder it is great. Length of pull is also much more comfortable with the folder. Fixed stock looks cooler though to me

Huh, would have guessed the same as you did initially but guess it comes down to never assume til you handle the gun eh?

Ah well just gotta list the fixed stock for $1900 I guess haha

Yup. Supply and demand. Love the free market.

Fixed stock sold out - fewer imported - no more supply until (maybe) a year if at all.

Folders still in stock at TI… even though some guys are listing them for $1800

I’m fighting myself to just keep both but it’s hard to justify having two of the same gun. I’m no scalper on principle though, I always prefer quick no hassle sales and reasonable prices. Even on Kijiji I’ve let some good #### go for hundreds under similar ads just to avoid the typical BS of haggling and tire kicking

2 is 1, 1 is none. Things brake and wear out. If something critical ever breaks on one and you can't get it fixed, the one rifle becomes a parts gun to keep the other going. I tend to buy several copies of any piece of shooting or camping kit that I really like and don't want to have to worry about finding parts or replacements in the future.
