I am fairly ignorant of the current values of M1 Garands. I have the 'opertunity' to purchase my first one, but I don't want to be took.

The rifle is a Winchester, if that makes a differance, made in 1943 and was never issued.

The Rifle in question is from an older gentleman I met at the local G-store. He bought it new(ish) 30yrs ago. When he got it it came with the Arsenal stickers/documnetation (He still the doc's somewhere). It apparetnly was built in '43, moved to Germany in the 50's and then to an arsenal in Denmark before coming to Canada to be sold in a retail outlet. He bought 3 at that time 2 he shot/tweaked, this one he kept tucked away, he has never fired it.

I know how to take the M1 apart as I also have a Nork M-305 so I am not completely ignorant of the inner workings of an American Battle Rifle. IMHO He is telling the truth he has never fired this rifle and you can tell it was never issued.

The numbers match from the back of the reciever and the bottom of the butt stock as well as the op-rod. The numbers on the trigger unit unfortunatly don't match, but the whole thing looks..... well it looks minty....

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

From the description I would say north of 1000.00 and probably closer to 1400.00 Garand prices are through the roof even the Italian stuff is getting close to the 800.00-900.00 range.

Hit YouTube and look for garand field strip instructions videos. Check for hidden pitting along the metal where it meets the wood on the underside.

Check the barrel carefully for bulges, rust, pitting and muzzle wear.

"...The numbers match..." The part numbers on an M1 should not match. They're drawing numbers that have nothing to do with the S/N.
If the S/N is on the butt plate and op rod, it was put there by somebody other than Winchester. It's not a bad thing if the parts are from the same maker. Unusual though.
What are the markings on the barrel? Anything that says 'VAR'? Wouldn't hurt to post all the markings.
"...back of the receiver..." That's the S/N.

"...The numbers match..." The part numbers on an M1 should not match. They're drawing numbers that have nothing to do with the S/N. The number on the op-rod is actaully 4 digits, they happen to co-incide with the 4 digits in the middle of the S/N.... I assumed this was normal.....

Sorry my bad, I should have been more clear. The S/N is on the wood BUTTSTOCK, not the butt pad, it is situated in such a way as you could see the ser.# without removing the firearm from a rack. Between the hand grip & the rear sling swivel. The lettering is approx 1/2" high and in the same 'font' as the serial# on the back of the reciever.

What are the markings on the barrel? Anything that says 'VAR'? Wouldn't hurt to post all the markings. I don't actually have the firearm, I had a look at it today but I don't remember any of the markings from the barrel. I guess I should have paid more attention......

"...back of the receiver..." That's the S/N. I assumed as much, This is also where it says 'Winchester' on the rifle.

Cheers!

Very good+ for $600 won't last long on the E.E.

Any very good + Garand will sell easily for around $800-$1000.

Hard to say what very good plus means but to me that's pretty close to mint shape.

Post some pictures.

Unfortunatly I didn't have my camera with me when I looked at the rifle, just my cell phone. I didn't bother with pics with my phone as all they would have shown was that it is in fact a garand, but wouldn't have been able to actually show any detail.

I'll see if I can get to see it today again, but I kinda doubt I'll have time.

I'm not the only one looking at this rifle, buddy says it's sold to the first guy who comes up with the cash, and meets his price. He thinks it's worth $2000, but has it priced for a 'quick sale' at $1500.00 FIRM (his words)......

I was thinking more along the lines of $1000 and he flat out said no, so I figgured I'd better get a value before I proceed..... I don't think I will be.

Thanks for the info.

Cheers!

They are all over gun broker for 800-1200 with no action on them what so ever because that is what the Buy it now price is or the starting bids is does not reflect the price of the firearm when you go to the completed listings and see what a few have sold for that is the value of the gun. Some people just don't get it when it comes to values even on EE when a firearm sits with 2000 views and no action on it you would think they would reevaluate .

"...without removing the firearm from a rack..." Stateside peace time Army thing. Highlighting the receiver markings is too.
"...abused with...for 500..." Some guys think any M1 is worth big bucks. There was a guy with rifles in poor condition at a local gun show who was asking $775. Same guy wanted $4 each for clips. He lugged 'em back and forth a lot.
