Looking to part with my Colt 2nd Gen '51 Navy. I rate it as 90% original, excellent bore, a ding on one side of the grips. A few marks near the barrel wedge (hence the 90% rating) caused by a previous owner that didn't deserve to have it.

What's it worth?

I rarely shoot it and I want to replace it with a Uberti '71 .38 Spl. Open Top. I'd take one of those as an even trade.

Has it got the square-back trigger guard or is it round?? There is one on the EE in a presentation case un-fired for $1000 firm, I bought this one a while back for $570 shipped. It had been shot quite a bit and needed a tune-up but it is well made and is a great shooter.
The second generation's are considered real Colts and have the Colt address on the top of the barrel, The Uberti's are well... Uberti's... and you should be able to get enough for your gun to buy a new '71 open top .38. I doubt that you will find a used one but it is possible. I also have a Uberti 1851 and it is also a great shooter.

Thanks for the response! My '51 has the square backed trigger guard and silver plated grip frame. It has not been shot a lot, only twice since I've had it. I much prefer my Remingtons to the Colt 'wedgies' when it comes to cap & ball guns.
I was thinking in the price range you mentioned, but not shipped. I got it and a 2nd Gen 3rd Model Dragoon as a package years ago so I'm not looking for top dollar. The Dragoon is my idea of a proper Colt cap & ball gun, no disrespect to Wild Bill Hickock and his reputed skill with his '51s.

''For A Few Dollars More", I could include a presentation case c/w brass dc bullet mould and Colt flask. Sets it off real purty-like! Also have the brochure that came with the gun.

Since the 2nd Gen guns were Italian made, I regard them as no better than the current crop of repros, many of them needing some work to make them function well, mine included. When I got it, it would go past top dead centre if you 'speed cocked' it as the locking bolt was a tad too wide for the cylinder notches.
I once read that when Colt got complaints re: these guns, they said that they didn't really think anyone was going to shoot them! Fine, if you are the type that likes to own guns you can't or won't shoot. All my guns 'work' for a place in my collection.
