How can you calculate the insurance or replacement value of packaged and frozen moose meat ex. if you lose it in a house fire or flood?
Any ideas...???

P.S.: I'm having a similar situation and need help.

I'd estimate the value of the meat based on the cost of the hunt, but they'll never go for that. I'd pitch it as natural organic meat, and use a value comparable to organic beef. Try to ding them for the cost of the hunt though...the worst they can do is say no.

Another option is to also calculate based on farm deer or Elk. I don't know of any Moose farms...

The hunt cost bit sounds like a reasonable way too.

GOOD LUCK!

They might laugh at you a little too.

I like the comparison to organic meat.

Hmmm, that's a nasty question.

You don't even want to know. We've collectively decided that nobody is allowed to do the math!!

AND, they probably won't insure it anyway.

I am glad you said it fordy, my wife sure likes to do the math.

I hear ya!

I got my neighbour hunting a couple years ago, and he does the ol' joint-banking with the wife.(I don't recommend this for sportsman, especially hunters with a taste for gear!)

A few years ago I calculated that the moose meat I got cost about $2.00 per pound once all the expenses of the hunt were factored in, it should be worth an amount above that I would think. You could also go with replacement with bison as well.

A good number of years ago an employee of mine unpluged a deep-freeze during a house renovation so he could power up his chop saw. He then forgot about plugging the freezer back in.

The screw up wasn't discovered until the job was finished some 3 weeks later. The home owner freely admited that the spoiled meat was deer and moose. As there was no way I could replace it I ended up buying him not only a new deep freeze but also a side of cut and wrapped BC beef as well as a whole pig. So in the end the value of the game meat was similar to what one would pay for beef and pork.

My deer meat (150 lbs boneless) from several deer this season:
Gun:$1000/20 years = $50
Bullets:5x $3 = $15
Gas:$100
Freezer paper and bags:$30
Total: $195

Price per pound: $195/150 lbs = $1.30/lb

Waterfowl 150lb boneless average/ year.

Gun: $2000/10 years = $200/year
Shells: 750 shells X $1.5 = $1125/y
Decoys and accessories = $450/y
Gas: $800/y
Dog Supplies: $100/year
Waders and clothing: $100/year
Total: $2775/year

$2775/150lbs = $18.50/lb

I will never do this again:runaway::eek:

We never figured out the moose meat but the first ruffed grouse at moose camp had about a $1500 price tag.

Enough with the math guys!!!

I just PM'ed Halger and asked how many demerit points adding up the cost of a hunt is worth. A couple of you are likely on thin ice with him as it is! I also suggested it be a an automatic 2 week timeout if it happens again.

The ball and chain does look over my shoulder from time to time.

Oh NOOO!! I always told my wife I was going out to get some "free meat" and here are you guys calculating costs! Shame on you! Now I'll need to think up another line....
