Hi all,

Need a new scope fro my LR gun so might have to sell some toys - want to keep the clearance to a minimium so kinda need to know what I can get for my garand in 308.

Serial Number 5467170
Bore is excellent & Shiny, no dark spots, no pitting
wood is original with 249594 stamped under the butt stock, Circle P marked under the grip
Finish on all metal is not good - no parkerizing left but no rust either
Shoots awesome still, round count unknown but up there - I like to shoot.

I have had this gun for 20+ years and it has been a shooter, dragged through the woods, across the country a few times and it shows. It is not a safe queen. Is to my knowledge all orig springfield except the barrel.

Any Ideas?

Thanks, I don't want to put it on EE without having it in the right ballpark, and if ballpark is to low back on the gunrack it goes - was my first gun and am kinda twisted on selling it.

thx JJ

"...Springfield M1..." 'Springfield' as in the U.S. Armoury or 'Springfield' as in Springfield Armory Inc.?
"...all orig..." The part drawing numbers will tell you that.
What make is the barrel? Any idea how many rounds through it? Has it lost its finish too?

Based on the description you wouldn't be too far off selling it for around $800. Maybe a little more. Too hard to say without pics.

WELL,

took the Garand out today to warm her up and possible last dance, got 2 shots off and bad things happened, using US ball ammo from the old plastic battle packs blew a primer and broke my firing pin. new one for me. Ammo is the primer/head sealed stuff that is good for 246 years stored on the bottom of the family pond....

Suspect that my garand is a union member and on suspicion of new contract/realignment talks it went on strike/work to rule

BAD GUN. :( Beatings shall commence.

Springfield as US Armory I believe, barrel finish is fine, receiver finish is gone - due to cleaning methods (brass brush)

Important finish - inside of barrel - is fine

Rounds? I shoot my guns - Personally at least 5000 +/- 2000 - before that (it was pretty when I bought it 20+years ago) I don't know.

Prospective buyers would probably want to know what sort of .308/7.62 conversion it was.
I'm assuming you're saying this is a US military gun (Springfield US Armory) and not a civilian one made by Springfield.
If that is the case then it could be one of several conversions.
The US Navy had two types, one with a chamber insert, that proved not to work very well, so then they made ones with new barrels.
Some company and / or country (Italy?) made 7.62 barrels out of original .30-06 barrels by machining off about .5 inches off the breech so it would fit the shorter 7.62 Nato. They also made a custom op rod and forward hand guard for it that were shortened the same .5 inch. (normal barrel length is 22" I believe).
These days you can also find ones that have aftermarket .308 barrels, but I'm not sure if this would be the case 20 yrs ago?

If it were a US Navy conversion it might be worth more to a collector or someone who wants one like that.

Excellent Info . thanks.

Now I just ahve to figure out who did the conversion :) If it was the Navy then should be able to do it by serial number no? If not what would be the best way?

Says on the back of the receiver:
U.S. Rifle
Cal. 30 M1
Springfield
Armory
5467170

So which one is it?

I believe it would say on the barrel. I don't recall the exact details but if you google navy Garand you should find the info. I'll post it later if I can find it.

google "navy garand 7.62 barrel marking" the top few hits have a lot of good info. The PDF document from thecmp.org is informative.

Ok now I understand why I was so confused - they had some pics there and my barrel is completely unmarked, so an aftermarket conversion I would guess. Apparently from what I can read it would/could be a citadel (krieger off brand) barrel as they were completely unmarked, most others had some markings. So no Navy special trophy rifle etc. There goes early retirement :)

THX for all -

"...So which one is it?..." That'd be an issue rifle that somebody put a .308 barrel on. Only matters to a collector. Your's has no collector value. Does have value as a shooter though.
"...20 yrs ago?..." Actually lots of 'em 20 years ago. Not so much 30 years ago. Mind you, 30 years ago, there was still crates of surplus .30-06 Ball available, Stateside. Not here though.
"...Navy then..." There are no records of who got what rifle. Those records were not kept. If it was a USN rifle, the stampings on the barrel would be Ordnance Dept stamps and not civilian.
