Value of WWII German helmet?

Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone may be able to give me an idea on the value of a German helmet from WWII that I received as a Christmas gift. From a great site I found I have been able to identify it as a transitional Austrian M1916 model helmet. It has two decals, one on each side, which identify it as being used by the German Police between 1933 and 1945. If anyone has a rough idea on the value I would appreciate the input - I don't plan on selling it, just want to know the market value.

If it is transitional it will have the M31 liner in it. Do you have more pictures, say like a full right and left side shot of the decal? WW1 helmets shells have been seen as low as $150.00 in my neck of the woods ( California ) to as high as #350.00 while complete helmets can go for double that price depending on condition and if with transitional liner and correct decals much higher. Thanks for the pics..I have several German WW2 era helmets, and have owned earlier ones in the past. Looks like an original liner and a post WW1 era repaint, typical for reissue for the Police. I have to have a better look at the decal, I collect Heer (Army) only, so not too up to date on this one. Value with helmets depends on originality, condition, and (believe it or not) size. Value depends almost solely on the decals, if they are original, ie police units, then you have a helmet worth quite a bit of change.

and as mentioned before, wehrmacht awards is a great place to find out if the decals are originals or fake.

the only flaw i can see is the party shield decal, which has large flakes missing, ive been told that fakes tend to decay is such a manner, while originals dont flake off.

other than that, it lookes like a nice helmet, i dont believe the linier is correct, even for a ww1 re-issue.
 
Original decals had a baked clear coating,as with the rest of helmet, and were quite durable. Usually needs a bit of effort to scarpe off original decals.
For some reason I have seen a lot of police helmets for sale lately.
 
As I said, I'm not looking to sell the helmet, just determine a rough value. It was given to me from my sister and she got it from her father-in-law who has had it in his basement for ages. From what info I've been able to find here it seems to find the description of a police helmet that started as an Austrian helmet. http://www.german-helmets.com/POLICE TRANSITIONAL Helmets-Austian.htm I've been trying to get on the Wehrmacht-Awards forum to ask the guys there but my registration to the site has not gone through yet (3 days now:mad: ). What the guys on WAF will tell you is that fakes have been made ever since 1945. As soon as the war ended they were made. There is one type of Knights Cross that was soley made after the war on the original dies.

If yours does turn out to be a fake I wouldn't worry. Fake decals tend to come off easily and you would be able to take them right off and have a nicely restored helmet to its pre-fake condition. You have a nice original liner in there which is better than having no decals. Helmets were often refurbed late in the war with out decals, so this is what it could possibly be.

Always remember to look on the bright side of collecting.
