Here is a different twist , if you were to buy a Savage and a Marlin bolt action rimfire both wood stocked and same barrel configuration which one would maintain their value longer if both were kept in the same used condition not BNIB.

Not trying to start a war just curious what people think.

I'm going to say Marlin because they cost only a fraction more, but the quality is much better. They may shoot about the same, but the wood stocks and synthetic stocks are better quality with Marlin. Even the iron sights that come stock are generally better.

Yup, Marlin quality is better IMO. Accuracy is about par with Savage. Their Model 60 and 581T are top notch (for the price, of course). I'd like a 60 one day but am happy enough with the 581T and MKIIF and the other toys that I can wait for the right deal.

FWIW, I bought my 581T (no scope) 25 bucks more than my MKIIF (with scope), both off the EE, both similarly gently "used". In spite of the Savage's better Accutrigger, I like the 581T a little more than the MKIIF. I shoot them more or less equally.

Marlin as they are built better (not by much, but they are) than the Savage. As well, Marlins are slightly harder to find whereas Savage Mk II's, and the earlier Lakefields, are everywhere

I cant speak for Marlin but every Savage I have owned has been incredible, accuracy was amazing, quality and tolerance was excellent as well. When I was going to buy another 17 hmr I sprung a bit more cash for the Savage because of previous experiences. Its a Ford and Chevy debate, both are excellent, just goes down to how much your willing to spend or which one you prefer.
