I'm fairly new to shooting and I'm looking for some recommendations on some pistol courses. I have GSG 1911-22 and I'm eventually going to pick up a 9mm of some kind. I have been working on sight picture and trying different grips and stances but I figure a bit of direction from someone who knows what they are talking about would put me on the right track and save me some headaches.
I am a member at Mission but I'd be willing to travel to anywhere in the lower mainland. If anyone has taken some courses and can recommend some or tell me who to avoid I would appreciate it.

I'm very new and have been going to Skill And Drills in Abbotsford a couple times. It's not an official class per se, but Rob the organizer/instructor is a great experienced guy and I've already learned tons. Everyone else I've met there is very friendly and willing to offer advice. It costs $20, runs weekly (usually friday nights), and you'll go through 300 rounds.

If you would like to pay for a day of an actual structured course (and likely costing you $200-600), there were some recommendations to me here:

Thanks for the info. I notice that skills and drills specifies centre fire pistols so this is a great excuse to speed up my plans and buy that 9mm.

S&D in Abbotsford will get you all the help you want and need. Just don't be afraid to ask for advice and then listen intently as it's not a "course" as such. So no one is watching you intently and waiting for you to do something wrong. YOU need to watch THEM and ask them to watch you and help out.

Rob and the others there really know their stuff and will point you in the right direction. The drop in fee of $10 as a non member is cheap for the information you'll get.

Speed Steel at Mission will be starting out in April. Contact John G, the pistol chairman at Mission, to get on the email list.

Also strongly recommend Rob's S&M night. S&D, whatever.

I have trained with a lot of different people and under a fair number of instructors including some big names that lots of people would consider "bucket list" instructors.

The training I have gotten from Rob is on par with what I've received from some very high-level people. If we were bringing him up from the states, we'd be paying $200/day to shoot with him. We pay $20/evening. It's the best deal in training I have ever seen. If you live in the lower mainland and don't train under Rob Engh, you are really, really missing out both on excellent instruction and on what I would call the training bargain of the century.

I also like to take people who are pretty new to shooting to see him. He's exactly what I want people new to the shooting scene to experience: not tense, wound-up guys who failed the army psych exam, but someone who can do things safely while still keeping everything fun and instructional.

If I could program someone's first year of gun ownership in Vancouver (or thereabouts) it would look like this:

1) buy a 9mm pistol, either Glock, M&P, USP, 226 or CZ75

2) buy 2-3000 rounds of 9mm ammo

3) use it all at Skills and Drills nights over the course of the next 12 months.

If a guy was to do that I would bet my house that he would be among the top 2% of shooters in this country by the end of his first year of gun ownership.

I have been twice and the advice that Rob provides is priceless to a new shooter like me. I highly recommend his S&D nights.

Except that 1-1.5 hour drive (both ways) from Vancouver to Abbotsford is killer on a weekly basis lol. Still, I'm trying to make it there at least once a month.

Carpool dude, lots of people coming each week from Vancouver area, even north Van.
Regarding 22s, it is a centerfire night, but if someone wants to come try it for the first time with a 22 I'm fine with that.

I'm new to guns too so I just took a course from Rod at Civil Advantage 1 on 1. It was out at the Abby range and we had the whole range to ourselves for over 3 hours. It's a combat pistol course and was really helpful. You can use your own gun or he has extras as well.

I'm going to check out the S&D night at Abby next.

Thats roughly how long it takes me. On the way back is less time because there is barely any traffic. I am willing to carpool with anyone that is leaving from Surrey. PM me if you're interested.

The skills and drill is something I'd be very interested in joining as a new shooter. As Abbottsford is not my home range would I need any special notes on my ATT?

I took the basic pistol course from X-Arms and it was great. www.xarms.ca

Pros:
It's all hands on training
They will provide you with the pistol, ammo, and holster
The class size is very small (3 in my class)
Jason will adapt the class to how the students are progressing
It's held at Abbotsford Fish and Game (Awesome club to join)
Classes are added as needed

Cons:
Not really X-Arm's fault - sometimes the Abbotsford range is booked and you have to reschedule.
