Well the season is closed for deer and bear on the Island but wolf and cougar are still open.

I have yet to meet someone who has seen a wolf on the island let alone shoot one. They are there but apparently pretty rare and reclusive.

Any of you hunted or bagged a wolf on the island? experiences/tips?

Most are shot incidentally while hunting something else. There are a few trappers that go for them. It's apparently pretty tricky and involves using dog pee for an attractant. Cougar hounds also make pretty good bait.

Have only seen one wolf, about 7 years ago .....we were hunting 5-6 miles back of the Robertson river area. (off the road to Pt. Renfrew ) it was about 400 yds away and accross a large draw and on a parallel Logging road.......watched him for about 2 minutes until he headed up a small hill and lost sight of him in the fireweed .....didn't think me and my 30-30 were up to the shot....never took one..

Have been fortunate to see 3 cougars in past 10 years.......but not since I started buying tags for them...

Apparently some have been hovering around the north side of Mt. Sicker on the south side of copper canyon behind Russel Farm Mkt just N of Duncan.

They have been apparently snooping around some of the farms around there. Talked to one guy out hunting and he mentioned a kill site nearby a farm and hearing some as well. some have been spotted too i think was the rumour

There's a pack that works the north shore from the Pt Hardy air port to almost pt Mcneill. They're sighted fairly regularly. I've only seen their sign. I've seen and heard quite a few in the Quatsino sound area too..

My hunting partner ran an arrow through one several years ago. That was behind Campbell River. It now hangs on his wall.

I saw one on highway 18 two years ago, big brown wolf.

Ive seen tracks pretty close to town in my favorite hunting spot. I think there is a couple packs around Lake Cowichan (Calum, care to comment?).

There's a established pack that circuits around Shaw creek and Upper Nanaimo Lakes.

Wolves are pretty much everywhere on Van Isle, from the Victoria watershed right up to the North tip of the Island. Spotting them moving at daytime is happenchance.

Do you need a tag to bag a wolf?

Also would a 30-06 do much damage to the pelt. Its either the 30-06 or a mini-14.

No Wolves in our area, just big dogs let out at night that pack up.
Only a real problem if you have livestock.

Further up Island there are some wolves, but not in the Lake Cowichan area.

There tends to be a bit of Wolf hysteria on Van Island.
Most folks claiming Wolf sightings can't tell the difference between Wolves and domestic Dogs.
IMHO the wolves can have all the sick, and starving Deer they can eat.

Theres a bunch around here. Id rather shoot a cougar for the skin tho!

Some Vancouver island Wolves have this Pariste that if you get it in your Lungs there like worms and eat you from the inside out. Its either Hart or lungs i cant Remember and dont really want to.

I remember when i took my trapping Course 24 years ago in Campbell River the instructor warned Us to wear Rubber gloves when skinnig Vancouver island wolves.

That kinda turned me off Wolves and skinning them.

Id shoot one around here if i saw one tho!

Yea thats the idea, I don't think I would eat one if I got it and am mainly interested in the skin but would gladly provide the meat to someone.

I am really just looking for an excuse to still take my rifle out in the bush. I might go out with a native friend who is planning to get a couple more deer so I wouldn't mind bringing a rifle with me but wouldn't if there was nothing for me to shoot, plus wouldn't it just be horrible to get a clean sight at a wolf and be empty handed? oh the humanity.

LOL that parasite in the Wolves its in there Blood or fur i cant remember maby both!
just breathing in the parasites or getting Blood on your hands and then in your mouth you can get it.
They made a big deal about it back then. Maby its gone now But i aint talking any chances.

Its Not tricanosous its something else!

I dont think anyone eats them ;)

We used to take our boat up to Nixon Creek and camp on the beach there during the summers
back in 1990-92 (between Hmoon Bay and Caycuse)...it was an abandoned log dump back then and I believe a campsite of sorts now...

There was a small sand spit about 20 or so feet sticking out from the shore about 400 yards from where we were camped.....you could see all the wolf trax in the sand and lots of scat all along the beach at the spit .....

took the camp shovel and cleaned off the trax and lightly buried the scat under some sand..........went back the next day to check and the pack had been back overnite........lots of fresh tracks...some digging at the scat hole...and some fresh "dumps"........

.....I guess that puts it at about 15-16 miles from Lk. Cowichan...so theoreticaly .....you got wolves !!!

Parasite or not, I'm sorry but I find the idea of eating a wolf kinda revolting actually. I didn't even realize that folks ate them. Yukkk.
