Not sure if this has been posted before:

I was browsing a photography forum and saw this. Turns out some folks purposely cut holes into the fence at the reserve, releasing the wolves on Jan 1st and actually shot two of them, killing one. While I'm all for hunting and would like to get involved in it again, this is pretty unsportsman like IMHO.

Sounds like it was 2 separate incidences, releasing them and then 2 of them getting shot. Wolves born in captivity probably weren't afraid of someone a couple hundred yards away with a gun, not surprised they were shot. Too bad. Hopefully they get the other 2 back.
 
The shooting was done from a road, so it doesn't qualify as hunting.
The second wolf was recovered, with two gunshot wounds, but died.
The other two are still in the area.
 
PETA type animal rights groups are suspected of cutting the holes in the fence. It was well timed and planned. The staff is assuming the wolf was shot by a passing motorist. In any case, the liberated wolves were not expected to survive very long in the wild, as they had never hunted for food on their own.
The animal rights fanatics are now responsible for the deaths of the animals they set free.
 
I have a cottage in the area and also hunt deer in the forest. The entire story is strange, especially the shooting just after the wolves got out. Crime of opportunity or inside info? The two remaining wolves will probably starve or be consumed by their wild cousins unless they get back into the pen. I see wolf tracks every winter at the cottage, once inside of my shoeshoe tracks from the day before, but rarely hear them and have only seen one.
