Does anyone have experience with the Vang Comp (VCS) treatment? I have a stock Mossberg 590A1 with the standard unthreaded cylinder bore that I want to also use as a bird gun. I've never done any kind of bird hunting but I'm thinking about getting out for snow geese this year. I think I'm going to have to do some sort of barrel modification as I'm worried the cylinder bore might throw too wide of a pattern.

Would VCS be a viable alternative to getting my barrel threaded for a choke? Vang Comp claims VCS will reduce 00 spread by 50%, which I'm guessing would be somewhere in the neighborhood of a full choke. On their website Tactical Ordnance has the cost of VCS as $200. I haven't made any calls to gunsmiths yet, but I'm guessing the cost of choke threading plus chokes would likely end up being ~$150.

Thanks!

tac-ord does the barrel threading for $160..... i would rather have a threded barrel and a good selection of chokes.

-cylinder
-light modified
-full
(maybe a rifled choke if you want to use sabot 12guage)

would cover 95% of your hunting and choke tubes are around $60 each.....

you could shoot the firearm with ammo that is suitable for geese and see what pattern you are getting . try several different kinds of ammo as shotguns can do well with one type of ammo and do a terrible job with another similar ammo. it would be worth a try before working on your barrel.best of luck whatever you decide .

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try a few different brands at the range and see how they pattern. If I do need to make modifications, the choke threading sounds like the way to go.
