Vanguard 20 inch 270 Win Project and Range Test

Well, I got kinda bored so I decided to cut my Weatherby Vanguard S1 to 20 inches, and it happens to be a 270 Win. Took it to the range today to test with Federal Fusion 150 grs and it shoots sub MOA at 100 with and an average velocity of 2784 fps from the advertised 2850 fps in a 24 inch pipe (10 rounds fired and chronied). That means I am only losing 66 fps by chopping 4 inches off the factory 24 inch barrel. I am pretty sure this is going to inspire many more tests including Superformance powder driving 150 gr bullets in the near future.

For what it is worth, I have found the S1 to be the absolute best rifle for the money in having owned over 100 rifles in the past 3 years. Mine is stock with a smith tuned S1 trigger, better safety control than the S2 IMO, and a basic synthetic stock. Scope is a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 mounted in Burris Zee Signature rings.

Looking forward to smoking a deer with it!

Did you chrony the gun before you chopped it? Just because it *said* you'll get 2850 from it, doesn't mean you actually will. Without a chrony reading from before the chop, we really can't make any claims of how much the velocity has changed.
 
I ran some Hornady 130gr SP ammo through it and it shoots MOA at 100. For whatever reason it likes 150 Fusions a bit better. I lost about 100 fps on average with the 130 SPs from an avertised velocity of 3060.
 
Suther you are bang on, I should have chronied it at 24 inches. Accuracy was the same but none the less, I was pleased to see only an average of 66fps lost from published 24 inch data.

I have an S1, in .270 Win, with 24" barrel.

If I had the spare money, I would have ordered an S2 Blaze, from Wholsale Sports and shortened it to 20".

But, I'll have to settle with watching your results :)

Yeah, but you could have been running 30fps below advertised. Or 30fps above advertised. Its entirely possible (and to a certain degree entirely likely) that the amount you lost was quite a bit different from 66fps... But I have no way of telling if that is a high or low estimate, nevermind how much you might have actually lost.
