About two years ago, I purchased a Vanguard package for my son in .243. All together, he has put about 200 rounds through it and it has not had any issues, until today.

I was getting rid of the remaining brass from my (243) Rem. 7600 (the cases were really stretched to the point of splitting) when I came across a bag of brass collected from my son's shooting. All first fired.

I noticed a "ring" around the cases (Federal and Winchester factory ammo). Approximately 90% of this brass had to be discarded because I could actually feel the bulging ridge (from over-expanding) near the head. I measured these against the 7600 brass and on average, they were about 0.002" shorter.

The headspaced the rifle. It closed on the nogo, but would not close on the field gauge. That means:

1) The Remy was was out of headspace (before I got rid of it)
2) The Vanguard was close to that from factory.

I had bought a Vanguard about 4 months later in 243 and had absolutely no issues. I know, because I retrieved some of that brass too and it was approximately 0.004" shorter. What would cause the headspace to be lost like that, or was it like that from factory? Thoughts anyone?
