I have a weatherby vanguard 243 has anybody free floated the barrel?reason being the first shot out is off of where the following shots impact.anybody else have this issue?

A lot of people have floated the barrel with great success. Mine groups the first two right on top of each other but the third is an inch or so off. .257 Weatherby though so its probably heat-related. Have you tried taking a fouling shot prior to firing groups?

This is out of a cold dirty barrel it will be further off out of a clean cold barrel.first shot is 1 inch high and 1 inch left after that it is 1 jagged ripped hole ,right where I aimed.I think that it is heat related ,shot fired barrel gets warm and touches something .but it dosent get worse if you keep on shooting , just one growing hole.

I have a Vanguard in 30-06.
It was very tight in the synthetic stock when I got it.
Decided to try it anyway...not great, it shot a lot of flyers.
So I took the stock off and hogged out the forend and the sides
till I could slip a strip of paper right down to the receiver.
Voila! sub-moa consistently now, and with almost anything I
have tried in it.
Not saying it will fix yours, but it sure worked on mine.
FWIW, I have the identical rifle in 270, and it shoots just fine without
any mods.
Regards, Eagleye.

I am free floating the barrel on my Vanguard 300 Wby and putting in a Timney trigger. Once I see how it shoots then I may bed the stock etc - Wont know until I get it out on the range

I bubba'd my 308 (carbine) to free float the barrel. It is not the prettiest rifle anymore...but damn...it's a helluva shooter now with a 6x scope!
