I am considering the above basic models for an all-weather rig that won't break the bank. Both have features that I like and dislike.

The Vanguard steel is a nicer finish but the stock feels soft especially along the barrel channel. Remington SPS Stainless Synthetic - metal finish not as nice but the stock feels more solid. I cannot imagine there is necessarily a huge difference in accuracy potential as both have been known to shoot well.
Both have 24 inch barrels which I like.

Possibly looking at a 300 WSM; but may be considering 338 Win Mag in the Vanguard.

Any additional insights regarding either of these rifles would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

the SPS is a good value, but personally I would save a little bit longer and get a 700 XCR. One hell of a rifle

I have both, they are equally both very accurate. Its going to come down to which you prefer to handle. They are both very good rifles.

Here is something to bear in mind:

EVERYONE makes accessories for the Remington 700. We are talking stocks, scope mounts, pre-chambered barrels, triggers, firing pins, etc. It is the standard action against which all others are compared. Therefore, from the point of view of maximizing your future options, you simply cannot beat a Remington 700.

The Howa action is excellent, but it doesn't have the range of available after-market options that the Remington 700 has.

That's because it doesn't need them like the Remington does. :D

Consider a Stevens 200? Not pretty but accurate as hell under $300 availible in 300 win mag, 7mm Mag, 30-06, 25-06, 223 etc. Its not about the looks its how it performs! Its simply a Savage, need I say more?

I have had a Vanguard 300wsm (now gone), and just picked up a Remington 700XCR in 300 Win Mag. I agree with Todd Bartell, the Rembo is hands down a better rifle. I had the Vanguard off to Dave Jennings (Weatherby auth service center) and had it glass bedded, barrel free floated, crown re-cut and trigger rebuilt. From the factory the weatherby had so much trigger creep it was sick. It did not group that well either. After I had all the work done it was a decent shooter < 1" @ 100m but thats after sinking another 200$ into it. The Remington 700XCR had a solid proven action. Its easier to tune up, and when I get it back next week, (as I sent if off to "He who shall not be mentioned" in the republic of Alberta), will be a tack driver, not that it was all that shabby out of the box.

Owned both, save and get the Remington 700XCR!!

Possibly looking at a 300 WSM;

If you go with a shortmag, you'll likely be pissed off with the remington feeding problems. The Vanguard you won't.

Unless you want to customize alot, go with the Vanguard, they are awsome value. (And there are parts avialible for Vanguards) If you need a Remmy step up to the XCR.

Are Vangaurd adjstable for creep, I did not think they were.

yes,..the sear engagement is adjustable...but, the rub is that usually when you get the sear engagement where you want it the safety won't engage which requires a bit more work to remedy...it involves removing metal from the front of the trigger or from the safety plunger to clear the front of the trigger......so if it's not your own gun... ..I've done three of them,..so it but can be done...if I can do it:D ...but it's not as simple as twisting screws on a Remington...

I had a 270 sps in a .270 and I really had to work to find a load that would shoot MOA. I didnt like the finish on the SPS either.
I have a friend who own a .243 Vanguard and accuracy is good but the bolt seems to be sticky and at time hard to open. Its going back to the dealer from what I understand.
These $500 and under rifles are like picking straws, you never know what you're going to get.

Cheers!!

Go with the Vangaurd,I have both the vangard and the SPS.The Vangaurd is finished much nicer. Both my SPS and Vangaurd will shoot MOA.As far as the trigger on the Vangaurd I changed the spring in mine and it works as good or better than the Rem.
