im just reading on pacos forum about a bloke usin a ruger 1 in 38-55, usin a 249gr cast slug, he used varget 28.5gr to be precise, for 3/4 group at 50 yards...

anybody else using varget for this 38-55 ???

whats thoughts of (i probly know answer) using varget for the 375 win which i load to 38-55 velocity anyway...??

we r currently using 4198 with 255gr cast ..... have i not tried varget? and why would that be?

Thanks

Rhys, I have not tried Varget in my 38-55. I'm thinking it is slightly on the "slow" side for this chambering.
My go-to 38-55 powders with cast or jacketed bullets is H322, with Norma 200 and Reloder 7 also doing
quite well.
My M1894, with the 255 grain Barnes jacketed original [.277" diameter] chased by 3x grains of H322 is
a deadly load, flirting with moa, and at 1750 fps. Shot my biggest whitetail with this load. DRT Dave.

Thanks gents, i rekon i must of crossed this bridge years ago but perhaps when using jackets, since then just using 4198 for all including cast.
over the years i dropped back my charge--- only thing i could see being usefull was more % of case fill with varget.... but thats moot point for me at the moment.

im sure old mate had no real interest in velocity etc on the Paco forum

4198 reduces well, and works in both higher and lower velocity loads in 38-55. With Varget you might find that the lighter, lower pressure loads will tend to produce high spreads in velocity in 38-55.

Varget was named in part by Target and Varmint = Varget

38-55 I would not consider a great Target and Varmint Round

Better powders for 38-55 are out there

3/4 inch groups at 50 yards = no way to judge if a good load or a bad load

Powder coating those cast projectiles is cheap/easy and opens up the 38-55, .379 bullets to a whole different reality.
