I've been having wompum good luck with H380 and 52 gr sieras for target, but now I'm diddling around with the notion of 4000+ FPS from 40 gr Vmax's. 41 grs of H380 will only make 3850 fps. I know its easier to get umpum from varget.I also know that it heats things up considerably more than 380. How much does all that extra heat translate into throat errosion?

I'm actually getting about 3960 fps with 41 grains of H-380 and a 40 grain V-Max and since Hodgdon only lists this load as producing 39,200 CUP I'm willing to be a person could safely increase another grain without any trouble.

Having said that though, I'm totally happy with the 41 grain load but I'm also planning to try Varget just because it's a great powder in many rifles.

The varget is fine as long as your willing to wait 20 minutes for the heat mirage to stop comming off the barrel between shots..Wild heat

Actually that sounds really unappealing since the rifle gets used in competition. It's interesting that you mention the mirage. I was competing in Listowel on the weekend with loads using H-380 and I had very little mirage at times when other people were complaining.

How have you guys been finding H380 in regards to temp changes?

I have heard of a lot of people not using it as it appears to be not very stable with temp changes.

In regards to errosion I think no matter which powder is used there will be just as much errosion.

My best .22-250 loads have been with H-380 and H-414. (52 grain Sierra HPBT with H-380 and 55 grain Sierra SBT with H-414)

When Varget first hit the market I tried it with the 52 grainers, and was totally disappointed. However, I have since acquired three new Ruger tang-safety 77's. They are all sporter weight barrels, and one of them is another .22-250...so I am going to try the Varget again, when the weather breaks.

36.4 grns varget pushing 50gr barnes vamanators = death to yotes. Not to sure how that works for targets, but i get groups at a hundred yards you can cover with a beer cap. As for heat i dont usualy shoot more than 5 rounds before i run out of dogs to shot, so the barrel has time to cool off
