Varget substitute?

IMR4320 I tryed some and got a bit more vel.

You could try IMR 4064, IMR4895, IMR 4320, RL 15 and any number of others. There's nothing magic about Varget.

Try calling MacDonalds in Portage. I've found that Wade has had more of a selection of powder then can be found in Wpg lots of times.

I'm working on my H414 load, my local shop had lots and I bought a few pounds. Last batch was a little hot, still working on it.

Been using this lately for my .338LM but it really shines in my .257 Weatherby. Did the same as you and bought several pounds.

thanks guys. I went to Iowa last weekend, stopped at 3 cabellas on the way back. no varget ANYWHERE. I ended up getting IMR 4895.... ill try that stuff out, if it ends up doing well, i know i can always get that.

Several manuals show 4320 has the same load density and produces similar velocities to Varget, IMHO it would be a good substitute.

M118 was IMR4895

In Iraq and Afghanistan they used M118LR, which was RL-15. The temperature stability was very poor.

The new MK316 uses IMR4064 (as does Federal Gold Medal Match).

"...in place of Varget..." You'll have to work up the load again. There's no just changing powders. IMR4064 is your friend with 165 grain bullets.

I've had pretty good results with BL(C)-2 in my 308 with 168 gr match bullets, but not as much with Varget. I'd like to try IMR4064 and R15 as well, but essentially would like to use a powder for both my 308 bolt action and my AR.
