Variflame primer adapter

I think the Variflame adapter will be outdated by the new Remington " muzzleloader" primers that are coming here in the new year. It is basically a less powerull primer the same as the Variflame idea. The Variflame does work as said with more accuracy and less cleanup ( a friend of mine has one for his Omega), but will be wasted money in a couple of months. I just bought the .25 acp breech plug for my Omega, same idea but easier to handle the brass cartridge. So far I like it but I need to spend more time with it before I would recomend it or not. I guess after a dozen shots I am certainly not dissapointed but I don't have much experience with BP yet to know the difference either.

I shoot the vari-flame adapter in my Omega. No misfires so far, and no comment on the disappearance of the 'crud ring' since I have only shot Pyrodex in it. However powder clean up seems to be less since switching.

I was thinking the same thing after I posted this question. "Why not just have a less charged primer" I'm glad your on top of this and saved me the time and money of the variflame. BTW did you see any diffrence in the accruracy when using a less powerful primer? or just easier clean up?

My friend who switched to the variflame says its definately cleaner, as to accuracy I think it was noticible but not stunning. I think allot depends on the loads and sabots but every little bit helps.

I have found it a little cleaner, but it's not smokeless. My Omega is a bugger to load most of the time, but it shoots great. Thanks to Santa, this problem should now be gone. I am now switching to lead conicals. I have had good accuracy before with store bought, but am now going to make my own. I will still use the vari-flame though.

I was looking at conicals but do not know enough about them, I may have to start a new thread.... or just hijack this one quickly. Ahh I will start a new thread.

SIR has them in their catalog but none in stock for the near future. I tried ordering some before x-mas and they said they are all sold out for the year with no restocking date as yet. So I bought the .25 acp adapter.

I have tried the rem clean bores, and I have almost a whole package here that will be unused. I found them too short to use in my Traditions Pursuit. They would cause blow by from being to short to seal up properly, something that I don't have with Winchester primers. And they didn't seem to rid the crud ring with 777 just reduced it a bit.

I like the Variflame primers. They are about as dirty as a typical small rifle primer can be, but only a small amount of flame vents, as it is a smaller ignition soure. Typical 209 primers throw snot everywhere because of the overkill flame.

Also, have you ever had to pry a 209 primer out of a breech because it's expansion had wedged it in to the plug, or bolt (whatever the case may be).

...that doesn't happen with the variflame.

From the things that make you go "HMMMMMM" department............

Not that long ago Remington had a line of low power primers designated 209-4 (short for 410) for about 4.99 a package. They were really popular among the frontstuffer crowd. Remington has since "discontinued" production.....about the same time the Kleenbore low power primers showed up for about 6.99 a package.

Coincidence............? Talk amongst yourselves.
