Hey all.

My only point of reference for shotguns is the 12ga 870 that I own.

Is there is significant difference in felt recoil when you go to a 20ga or a 410?

I know size of load will make a difference. I'm talking about 2 3/4" buck, not any big magnum rounds.

It's just for paper targets (though I would like to try out trap and skeet at some point).

I'm just wondering if I'd have more fun and shoot more often with a lighter recoil shotgun. I know recoil pads or even a semi-auto 12ga would lighten things up a bit, but for now I'm looking at a 20ga or 410 pump and just want to see if that would make a difference.

Thanks

Jack

A .410 has basically no recoil, for an adult. A kid will feel a little kick, but more noise than anything.

A poorly fitting single shot 20, firing a 3" magnum, CAN feel like a hell of a kick. But shooting target loads from a gas semi 20 will be a powderpuff.

Yes, a 20 ga pump shooting light loads will be a joy to shoot.

Good point on skeeet loads. So far I've been playing around with some birdshot, just to get the feel of the action and familiar with the gun. I've also used some buck, some slugs, and tried a box of the "reduced load" Remington 00.

I'll shop around for a lighter 12ga load just for fun shooting at the range.

How hard it is to find a 410 pump? I've seen 410 versions of an 870 Express on some American websites, but they don't seem too common. And I've also heard that 410 ammo is more expensive. Is that the case?
