I am officially asking for The Forum's help in putting together a rifle primarily going to be used as a gopher gun but would like to be able to play at long range as well
this is as far as I have gotten myself


Barrel--- Shilen 1-8" bull contour
Action --- Savage Mod 12 BVSS in .223
Stock---- For now will stick withh the laminate and bed it
Bases------ Farrell one piece 20moa
Scope----- Sightron SIII LR 6-24 mil dot
Rings------ Burris Sig rings with inserts

It is all over now except for the waiting and that is killing me
All the parts are in or on order just a matter of sitting quietly....................
comments would be appreciated

Either the Savage or Stevens is excellent. If you want a really light trigger, then the Stevens and an aftermarket trigger will do the job. I can offer Timney's which get to around 1.5lbs. Otherwise, the Accutrigger is superb and light enough for most shooters.

Glad you like the Shilen option. 223/ 8 twist is a great set up. Let me know when you want to order one.

For stocks, there are so many to choose from these days. For a lam stock, the BVSS is really nice. For a composite, I prefer the HS over the McM. More a function of what you can get then want. Getting a Savage in the right stock style is not a bad idea and likely lead to a less expensive build.

There seem to be a few Choate varminters kicking around and these do work well. I enjoyed the fit, not necessarily the looks.

I hear good things about KP stuff but have no personal experience. I carry Farrell, Millett and others for less money.

For rings, that is easy. Burris Sig rings with inserts. Nothing better in the industry at any price. Just decide whether you want a 1" or 30mm scope and get rings/inserts to fit.

For scopes, I use alot of Bushnell Elite 4200's and have been very happy. The 6500's are getting some really good feedback.

I can also strongly recommend the Sightron SIII LR if you don't mind spending a bit more money. AWESOME glass for way less then some bigger names.

Nikon Monarchs also offer very nice glass and mechanicals but their reticle options are limited.

The reason i am sticking with the .223 is the fact that i have thousands of once fired brass as well as several thousand .224 projectiles in various weights as well as the dies etc. to reload them.............I probably should be thinking outside the box but as this is my first attempt at a LR/Varmint build I think i am going to start with a cartridge I have a little knowledge of:redface:

I would lean towards a .222 if I was building a gun from scratch for varmints.

Excellent barrel life & incredible accuracy. You will appreciate that extra barrel life after dropping some big bucks on a quality barrel.
 
223 is perfect. I say that because that's what i'm doing. i did it because i can use cheap and easy to find winchester brass, bullets are cheap and powder is cheap. plus i can still launch a 75gr bullet close to 2900fps which is all i want anyway.
i chose to use a bvss-s rifle. you spend $200-300 more for it than the stevens but you have a 1.5lb accutrigger and a really nice bench rest/varmint stock. as well as a complete stainless action to match your barrel:)
I also went with a elite 4200 scope.(6-24x50) don't think you can beat it for the price.

I like the Idea of using the BVSS action and stock .......anyone got a line on one?

It sounds like you are going to be happy as the proverbial pig in sh*t with a new .223. I am sure it will work well. :)
 
Update ......I have been away on exercise for the past three weeks and when I got home there was a shiny new Savage mod 12 bvss in .223 waiting for me to open up :dancingbanana::D...

Qeustion is the 1-9 twist factory barrel going to perform with a 80 gr. bullet or should I do it right from the start and go with the Shilen 1-8 twist barrel
 
I know a 1:9 will not work with an 80grain Berger VLD. Best I could get was a 6" group at 100.

I think the 75grain Amax would be the heaviest you would want but there is no guarantee that your barrel will stabilize them.

If you hadn't already ordered the rifle I was going to suggest just getting the Savage Target action since you were going to replace everything else. This would have had the adjustable to 6oz target trigger already on it.

I kinda figured the barrel change was going to happen...........as for the target action try and find them.......and even if you can they run near 600 bucks I had a hard enough time finding the 12 bvss in stock from BC to Ont
 
Well if your planning to upgrade your barrel pretty sure you'll be able to find someone on the EE would buy the factory barrel. ;)

Sounds interesting because I'm heading in the same direction with the shilen barrel, except I'm using Steven action.

using the stevens action was my origonal plan
BUT I was too impatient to wait until I could get my hands on a better stock than the factory stevens one.
the 12 Bvss comes with a laminate stock that will work fine for me for the near future
 
I ordered a 12 LPV in .223 and will eventually turn it into a 20 VarTarg. I was going to do it this year but I just got a few contractor bills and I'm way over my construction budget.

What twist are you getting in the .223? Are you planning on floggin the takeoff barrel?

If so, PM me....might be interested if not asking match barrel price for it.

mine will be for sale in a short while.......fluted 26" 1-9 stainless bull barrel recessed crown un-fired:)
