This is strictly a curiosity thing.. I have noticed some varmint rifles like the vintage 700 BDL varmint had a "block" on top of the barrel. What the heck is the purpose of this??

The block is there for the long, external adjustment, scopes and mounts as produced by Unertl, Lyman, B&L, and others. The blocks continued to be a feature long after such scopes had ceased being readily available. The advent of high powered, internally adjustable scopes which could be mounted on the receiver only marked the beginning of the end for those neat old scopes for the simple reasons that they weighed less and worked better.
