Hello, im going to be browsing the equipment exchange asap. I though wile im waiting i could ask for your recommendations and why. I would also like to see what others are using if amyone would like to post there favorite coyote guns!

Varmint rifles for a lot of folks are whatever they happen to be holding when a varmint appears. That said, a 223 in a light handy carbine would be hard to beat for most applications. If you’re talking about prairie dogs at 500 yards + it’s not the answer but you haven’t really asked a specific question yet.

1. What is the target species.
2. What ranges will the species be engaged.
3. Do you reload
4. What volume of shooting do you forsee

-What kind of varmints are we shooting?
-What ranges are we shooting them at?
-Are we walking the fields and shooting?
-Are we setting up on a bench in the corner of a field shooting from close to far?
-Do you reload?
-Are there noise concerns in the area you intend to shoot?

Varmint rifles are quite a diverse sector of the rifle shooting world. Virtually any rifle can be put to use as a Varmint rifle and yet there are countless specialized cartridges and rifles for all kinds of niches. Let us know what you’re after and I’m sure someone will have the answer.

I recently built a varmint specific rifle that suits my wants/needs.
- Rem700 SPS AAC, in 223Rem with the 18" barrel
- HS Precision stock with palm swell
- Leupold Mark AR 6-18X40, maillot reticle and 4" objective sunshade
- Harris 9-13" notched leg bipod and a 13-27" for late season in the snow

I wanted a bull barrel but had to cut the weight so that it was not a pig to carry when walking ridge lines. 223Rem does well in a short barrel, inexpensive to shoot, and has no recoil. I wanted the flexibility in my optics for close or long range.

Planning to build another just for walking hunts on coyotes, fox, and bobcat. Thinking of going with a skinny barrelled 22-250 in either a Rem700 or Model Seven and the same scope on my previously mentioned rig.

I use a 2506 because the results are immediate.
However its hard on barrels so i started a project to build a 20 tac. Its still a 223 for now and will see use as is until i run out of 223 bullets. With the weight and chassis and brake i can easily spot my own hits.
On the other hand i have another project in the works as a 250 savage in a traditional stalking rifle style for coyotes and wolf

I did get one with a 270, the exit hole was about 4". The lightest bullet i could get was a 130gr accubond. What do you use?

Coyote, best range i can around here with the mountains is around 200yd, i reload only because i have a 8mm-O8 and have to, and im just a weekend guy, couple times a month.

I know some one who hunts sheep with a 2506, and offered to lend it to me for coyote. How does it work what rounds are you using?

My main coyote rifle is a 25-06. I use factory Federal Premium 85gr Nosler Ballistic Tip ammo.

Not ideal if you want to save the pelt but if you don't want to salvage what's left of them and just want them dead it's the perfect coyote caliber.

Pretty much summed up my answer. I reload. 75gr vmax at 3550 to 3600fps. 117gr interlock at 3100fps. I use it from crows and ontario groundhogs to coyote to wolf to deer and even black bear. Having seen what it can do id use it for moose as well even though i believe its to light for a dedicated moose rifle. It shoots fast and flat and hits hard. Im hoping my next barrel likes the 75gr vmax as well. Its not exactly fur friendly everytime but it drops them hard. The interlocks do great on larger game and also flatten dogs with out to big of a hole. Twoonie size exit on a 85lb wolf. Shot thru both shoulders at about 40 yards or so. Chest shot coyotes about a nickle to quarter sized exits. The vmax can leave 6-8" holes on broadside shots
