Varmint vs Target Rifle

Hello,

I'm considering buying my first rifle for long range shooting. I'm looking at the following x-bolts in 6.5cm. The two are pretty much the same, except that the varmint rifle has a heavier barrel and is an overall shorter rifle (but same length barrel). I'm not really sure what the advantage of one over the other. Can anyone explain what are the advantages of one over the other? Why would the varmint rifle be shorter and have a heavier barrel? I realize the heavier barrel may be more accurate for multiple shots but does it last longer as well? Thanks in advance.

the long range you can attach a sling to (easier to carry) and the other one you can attach a bipod for bench shooting - for your intended purposes I would go with the varmint flavor
 
varmint rifles are usually made for hunting ground hogs to coyote with light and fast bullets. so slow twist. long range target rifles should be made with faster twist to stabilize longer heavier higher BC bullets

You could attach a sling or bipod to either gun.

OP, why a browning? Limiting yourself to upgrades down the road with a browning.

I'm open to other rifles, I just wanted to know the real difference between these two because I read a lot of good reviews on them and I have an opportunity to get one for a really good price.

Is there a reason the overall length of the varmint rifle is shorter? Does the heavier barrel only contribute to accuracy or does it increase barrel life as well?
 
What's your budget ?

I answered your question. If you are looking for a rifle, the first question you must ask yourself, is how far your target, how fast you want your bullet to hit and with how much energy. then you figure out which bullet in which cartridge will do it best and you get a barrel with the proper twist for the bullet. of you want to buy once for a long time and don't put it on EE a few weeks later, it's how you do it.

Twist rate is identical; 7:1 both fast for heavy bullets, so no difference. (no big deal, I used to shoot ground hogs with a 6.5 x 55), so, the deciding factor for me would be weight. If I had to chose between these two, I would chose the long range as it weights a pound less than the varmint/target version. Put a nice scope on it, and you will be at about the same weight as the varmint without a scope.

Barrel weight has no effect on how long a barrel will last. If it were only going to be used on a shooting bench, then the varmint would be fine.
 
The long range rifle is longer over all lenth because they are designed to be shot prone where you need the longer length of pull
 
But is the length actually different? It looks to be basically the same stock, and both have spacers available to adjust length of pull..?
