looking at getting a new varmit set-up.what does every one think is the best for modle/caliber/barrel length etc. was looking at a 22-250 but am now thinking 243 with 55 grain bullets.any input would be appreciated.
 
There are many posts on this topic, but i won't be like the grouchy old timers when i first joined :) I really like the .243 if you wanna do more than just shoot pups and other varmint with this rifle. But, if you want strictly a varmint gun i'd go .223. Thats what i shoot and i love its performance. But the .243 does perform better, longer, and has much better terminal ballistics. So either go .223 or .243, the 22-250 isn't worth it as far as im concerned.
 
It takes just as long to contribute some of your knowledge on the subject as it does to rip the guy for asking....

For me, .223 with 55gr in my CZ 527 Kevlar stocked with 4x12 scope.
I am going to experiment with .204 Ruger out of a TC Prohunter later this spring, when I can shoot again.

I've heard people say that .243 ruins hides? I don't know.
 
Why can't guys just answer the freaking question? It is so pathetic that you don't mind typing to flame someone but you can't help him out.:rolleyes:

I would suggest .204 if it is for coyote's and anything smaller. .243 will let you shoot deer as well. .223, well because everybody should have one.

I personally like the .204. it is Flatter, Faster, quieter, it allows you to see your shots, very effective on yotes.

Best caliber for varmint hunting

This works really well with CGN's "search" feature but make sure you choose something more than "1 week ago" by clicking the "Advance Search"

If your requirement is for a varmint rifle cartridge that will absolutely not cause ricochets, a .243 with 55 gr BTs is pretty hard to beat. Mine shoots those little needles pretty well at close to medium range, but by the time you reach out to 600 yards the groups are opening up and if long range is your ambition a heavier match bullet might be a better choice.
 
"...looking at getting..." A lot depends on where you are and what varmint(s) you're hunting. As mentioned, a standard .243 hunting rifle would be more versatile. Not so much in a heavy barreled varmint rifle. Those are heavy to lug around.
"...heard people say that .243 ruins hides..." Depends on the bullet used. 90 grain FMJ's make a puncture wound. Varmint and deer bullets make very big holes though.
"...varmint rifle cartridge that will absolutely not cause ricochets..." Varmint bullets will disintegrate if they hit something hard. Doesn't have to be very hard either. Shot at a ground hog one time using my .243 with 75 grain bullets, as I recall. The chuck laughed and scooted down his hole. Found the thistle stem it had hit and blown up on.
55 grain 6mm bullets are kind of light for most commercial hunting rifles. Most of 'em are rifled for heavier bullets.
 
What "varmints" my 223 won't handle, my 25-06 will. I like Remington 700's and Leupold scopes, but there's lots of other good bolt action & single shots out there.

Lots have started with the 223 and been more than happy with them.

That is freaking funny!!!! You sir have brought new life to CGN.

To add to the thread consider a 223rem cheap to reload for or purchase ammo for. 22-250 brass gets pricey and uses a little more powder.
