vehicle mounted deer warning whistles - yea or nay?

What's the final word on these gizmos?

I never hit a deer before, but then when my neighbor gave me a set, within 2 weeks of putting them on the car, I smacked a deer.

(joking, my wife says I put them on backwards :cool: )



What's your experience with them? Do they work or not?
 
I saw a study from North Dakota or Montana about deer whistles. From the depths of my dusty memory, I think whistles were not found to have any effect. Familiarity to the sound over time being one factor.

For what it is worth, Saskatchewan Govt Insurance, the crown car insurance provider, has a number of animal collision avoidance tips. I don't think they promote deer whistles.
 
if a deer is feeding in the ditch as you approach most of the time he will stay there until you go by, with the warning whistles on, it spooks the deer and they run to get clear of it usually into you car or truck. they tried them here for a while but found that they were not much good for anything.
 
They are a PERFECT idea! I don't care what anyone says, THEY WORK!


They work by empting your wallet AND making your new car look UGLY;) :D ! (anything else and there usless!)

on a serious note, has anyone ever seen that night vision system that the caddy's were using, or maybe mercedes-benz's new system i was reading out?
 
I used to work in an autobody shop and I noticed that over half of the cars coming in for deer strikes had the whistles on them. I think the deer hear the whistle and come out of the ditch to see what gives. Deer are curious after all.

I say they don't work. A deer will usually only run out infront of you if it's startled. If the deer is grazing in a ditch it will probably stay there unless it's startled. Maybe the whistles startle them more than just a car passing by. I have also noticed that the deer will move if they hear the car slowing down. Keeping your speed down and keeping an eye out is the best defence.

X2 - They are complete and utter BS. If we can't hear the sound they 'supposedly' make, neither can deer. Check the studies. Google is your friend.

That means don't drive around like a bozo looking 10 feet in front of your hood ornament or fiddling with the radio. Look well in front and let your peripheral vision do some of the work. And if possible, know your area. I was following a co-worker to a domestic in progress. He didn't know the area but it was part of my daily commute so I knew it like the back of my hand. Long story short, I got a good view of him flattening bambi with his Crown Vic to the tune of about $8K in damage.
