Vent holes in M14 handguard

I just read(Equipment Exchange) about someone putting vent holes in the handguard of his M14/M305. Are there benefits to this? I know this get hot. Good idea?
 
They just facilitate cooling. Cool barrels are generally more accurate than hot ones. Instead of waiting 20 minutes for the barrel to cool, you'll only need to wait 15
 
Why not just remove the handguard entirely?
I can understand having it on a real battle rifle, preventing burns and such; but does the M14 handguard serve any other purpose?
 
I see vented handguards on the M21 from SA. My understanding is that the vented handguards can cause a mirage effect when looking through the scope. Don't quote me on it though .. As Prosper hinted .. not really needed.

the military dropped them because they were easier to break.
if one needs to shoot from a cold bbl, the difference will not be felt (5 min), but like Czechitout and DaveGP said, the mirage is what you'll get.

If you hunt (like I do) you risk getting snow where it shouldn't be, and have it freeze on you, changing the harmonics of the BBl.

The military dropped them because the damp jungle conditions created steam when fired obscuring the sight picture. rigrat

DaveGP... You heat your guns up... Boy, that "shocks" me... I just can't imagine that... bwahahaha!!!

And just to stay on topic... There is no need for the vent holes... IMHO...

Agreed. Had one and heat mirage was very annoying. The M14 barrels are such a thin profile, mine would heat up enough to cause mirage after 1 or 2 mags.
