Hey guys and girls , I'm new to CGN just a quick couple questions in regards to the versa max tactical . Now my vmax tac shoots 23-4"-3"-3.5" my question is which size does the mag limit apply to the 5rd Canadian law. Pls note that the barrel is stamped 23/4"-3" but the barrel and receiver are 3.5" ??? So confused but my understanding is 5rds of 3.5" loaded in the gun is legal for range use? Also is it illegal to use smaller shells than what the barrel is stamped? like low recoil 2.25" buckshot ???

Ar180, I am going to disagree and say that 5x 3" shells is the limit for that firearm. This came up years ago and I recall someone posted the FRT for this firearm and the RCMP considers it a 3" marked gun, thus the 5x 3" limit.

I called Remington down south and they said the reason for the 23/4-3" stamp on the barrel is cause the 3.5" in the tube mag would bulge the hulls so for reliably and functionality 23/4-3" was placed on barrel to eliminate jams with the big boys (3.5")

You might be on to something.....

The legal limit would be what the FRT states the largest shell it can run. Can anyone verify the FRT specs and put this to rest?

Adamg , so the rcmp goes off what the barrel says not what the chamber and barrel are designed to shoot ?? (3.5")does this mean I have to change my barrel to get the 5rds of 3.5" ? Can I shoot smaller shells in the same gun 2.25"-2.75" ?

That's getting pretty technical, beyond my knowledge. Maybe switching barrels to one that says 3.5" makes it OK to run 5x 3.5" shells. Or maybe the receiver's serial number still links back to a Versa Max Tactical model firearms that is FRT listed as a 3" gun so still 5x 3" shells. Personally I bought a used, 3gun modified VM Sportsman so I could run the 5x 3.5" no problemo.

any more information on this....the FRT would be perfect. I believe it should be blocked to hold the longer listed shells (3"),...at 5rds in the tube. My Versamax tactical is marked 2 3/4", and 3". Mine only holds 4 rds of 3" shells. I debated the Remington rep, but they are saying no, it is only allowed to hold 5 rds of 2 3/4".

I called the RCMP a few years ago and they told me the tactical VersaMax has a 3.5" chamber, so it is limited to 5 x 3.5" shells. Whatever the specs say in the FRT will be the final word. Don't get all of your legal advice from anonymous people on the Internet. Call the RCMP yourself and get the FRT specs.

Let me also add that just because you are legally entitled to do something, there is no guarantee the cop investigating you will agree. I think many people avoid the hassle of a confused cop by cutting down the regular VersaMax that is marked 3.5" on the barrel.
