Hey guys~figured there might be more Versa Max guys in here than the sporting shotgun forum. Took delivery of a new VM Sportsman this past week, and got it out for it's first shoot yesterday. I'd used a VM Tactical years ago, but I guess I didn't remember the thumb-jammer. lol Anyhow, I have no tactical/3-gun aspirations at all...but wondered if anyone here running a VM has switched-out the carrier to something that won't hurt/jam-your-thumb like the factory one does. I only shot around 100 rounds...but wow, can steel feel it today.

I have sent a note off to Casey @ Tac Ord, he's about 15 minutes up the road from me..waiting to hear back. I don't want to open/alter the feeding port, so my inquiry had to do with whether or not the one he offers will remedy that situation without any receive milling. After a whopping 10 minutes of Google work last night, looks like some guys weld that fork away, other guys use shorter (Benelli?) ones, some guys say Remington offers a "Competition" one but having looked at photos of it, looks to be the same length..but no idea as to whether or not it'll jam your thumb like the forked one does.

Anyhow, if you've changed yours to something better...I'd love to hear from you! Otherwise..it was a nice, relatively recoil-free outing. My 14 year old son says so at least...he shot it 90% of the time while I threw the clays! :)

Im using the TacOrd one , Works great ! Didn't need to open anything up either.

Thanks guys! Agreed, Casey is the man.

DILLIGAF~did you buy those as parts and install them, or, did you leave your gun with Casey and he did the work?

Since I'm new to the VMs I need to ask~what charging handle is on your gun? I already switched-out the factory "Sportsman" one for a the Nordic one normally on the upper level VMs. Neither looked like yours. What about the action release?

I got Casey to do all the upgrades they offer, Minus the milling since I use this as my hunting rig .

UPDATE: Well, I've been to see Casey...and had him polish the feed port/feed area, replace the carrier with one of his, and install one of his T/O bolt-release buttons. I got a chance to test it out this past weekend and suffice to say...the thing ran like a top! For a guy reluctant to modify ANYTHING I look at upgrades/tuning to be gimmicky unless I have a VERY strong sense it's required. WITHOUT A DOUBT, a little TLC from Casey positively transforms a Versa Max. Period. The upgrades/work were both fairly priced, but it was a no-brainer for me. I had complete faith in his abilities, just enough time behind a Versa Max to feel like it's the semi I want to shoot going forward...so why not try to make it run at it's best?

Anyhow, I'm a frugal guy...always working with a limited budget...and have zero inclination to tinker with factory guns. This work done by Casey is the most satisfying gun-related purchase/expenditure I've made all year.

I'll update with a couple of photos later today.

Sounds like it worked out well for you, I tend to only mod or upgrade only if the stock configuration doesn’t suit my use of something. It has to be an improvement in fit and function, then it’s all good in my eyes. Upgrades are always good things.
