Hello,

I seek some advice yet again from the AR Gods here on the Board, After seeking much advice on a build here over the last few months i finally built from scratch a RRA 14.5 inch AR with a flatop, that I LOVE, i love even more the fact that i built it from a stripped reciever and bare parts to the complete gun with jsut a little bit of help from a fellow baord member and all around good guy.

NOW i have a standard M-4 fatty style hand guards on the front and I do not think that I am ready to go to a quad rail, although it could be about a year or so down the road. However i have tried a vertical foregrip on a 10.5 inch AR and i must say that i liked it, Also i think it would make it more confertable to shoot for both myself and my girlfriend.

So can i mount a grip on the fatty hanguards? I also have the standard not fatty carbine hanguards i can swap out. So if i can what do i need to do this and what fore grip is recommended? I donot plan on mounting lights in the future at all so i do not need anything that holds batteries ETC.

I have 3.5 months to get the parts together as I am at Sea until then but want to get it going as soon as i get home.

Please some advice would be good.

best regards,
gavin

In order to mount a VFG on a standard handguard you'll need a rail similar to this one you can probably find in the EE with relative ease. I don't know who stocks them offhand.

If you're not planning an mounting any accessories the KAC foregrip is comfortable and your girlfriend would probably like it (good for small hands).

I have a personal preference for Tango down.

Hey Gavin, hope you're enjoying the south seas.:D

The above rail works fine with any vertical foregrip that you find comfortable. However, because both CAR and M4 handguards are two piece they tend to flex somewhat with a vertical foregrip attached so are not as solid as single piece handguards like some of the more expensive quad rail systems. That being said, you can get the above noted rail and a vertical foregrip for anywhere between $25 - $100 whereas a good one-piece quad rail (Yankee Hill, Larue, Knights, etc.) is going to cost you between $150-$300+ not including the cost of the foregrip.

This is one case where you really can go from very cheap to very expensive. You just have to decide how much you want to spend.

P.S. The foregrip/rail assembly you tried on my 10 1/2" CAR cost a total of $25

The cheap mounts are ok for normal use,as long as they are not plastic rails. For heavy use in matches and whatnot or if you just play rough they can be dangerous.I've seen some lower handguards ripped off in the middle of a shoot when too much force is applied to the VFG during stress shoots and when using modified shooting positions. The problem is that if too much tourque is applied to the VFG the lower handguard will pop off,it doesn't happen often but it's enough to convince me that the systems are not well suited for hard use. A quad rail of some type is the best solution be it FF or not.

i agree you should see the hand of the surgeon that shot himself in the hand whit a uzi when the cheap ass mount failed. WOW

Wolverine also carries these type of rails. I used one for about a year, it worked good but it did wobble a bit. A ok for look-cool-factor but I like 'solid' feeling guns and eventaully went to a S.I.R. system.

Thanks for all the great advice, I think i will be going the cheap way, 50 bucks or less as i am not going to be donig any great deal of high stress shooting and rapid firing 5 shots i do not expect a great deal of torque to be a factor.

Good day Gerry good to hear from you, I been down here a month now adn got some diving in at Bora Bora and have done quite a bit of mountian biking around the other French Polyensian islands, the Company put me up in this sweet resort type Hotel in Tahiti the first night i was here and that was lot of fun, beach, sun, sand and of course bikinis. Done one trip up to Hawaii and i am suppose to go back in a couple of weeks. Was at Rarotonga in the Cook isalnds (new zealand) 2 days ago and that was by far a very unique place. I am enjoying myself adn the girl friend is coming for a visit in August. Hope the summer is going alright for you and the family and shooting is good. When is the fall Knob Creek? I will be home the end of sept and interested in going.

OH and the rail and fore grip, 25 bucks eh, do mind PMing me the source, and if the source is you great, add whatever you need to add for yourself, liek i said dont really want to go more that 50 bucks,
best regards,
Gavin @ Sea
