Very interesting pre-64 M70

Anybody know the provenance of this rifle? Looks like it has seen a few miles in the African bush! I really like the aperture sight!

Is that a 9x57?

Edit - on 2nd thought the serial number seems too high to be that chambering .
 
That is most deffinately not a 375. Ita a .416 something.

A 416 something was not available in a pre-64 Model 70. . It's a 375 H&H Magnum. . I have one built in the same year as the one in the picture. . The 375 H&H and 300 H&H had the notch in the front of the receiver to accommodate the H&H case length. .
 
There was a thread on this rifle a while ago... it originally belonged to PH and gunwriter, the late Finn Aagaard. He bought it new in Nairobi, fitted out the peep sight, then later sold it after chopping the barrel to 22 inches. He said it never quite felt the same after shortening it.

I have no idea who has it now, but it was originally a .375 H&H.

That is interesting, thanks for the information on that. I never knew that about the magnum length cartridges and that notch.
