This nice non-typical Columbia Blacktail was down the street from my house here in Victoria yesterday (10/10/2015). He was at about 25 yards and with another buck the same size but with a really nice typical 4X4 rack with decent brow tines as a bonus (picture coming). They were accompanied by two does also. I hoped I might see the boy's get into a scrap, but the rut hasn't kicked in yet. This would be considered by Vancouver Island hunter's a a definate 'shooter". Guessing he was about 135 live weight. Urban deer are plentiful here in town, eating the residents expensive plants (boo-hoo) is all the talk and last year they trapped/culled 11 at a cost of over $1,000.00 per deer. Doubt they would taste good as their diet mainly consists of tulips, plants and monsanto grass from the golf course. Nice to see though. This was in Rockland for those familiar with Victoria. The photo doesn't show the multiple sticker-points well unfortunately (wife's damn smart-phone).

A little while back, I made a deal on a number of handguns from a gentleman in Esquimalt. Going to pick them up, down Admirals Rd., past the naval base, I couldn't believe the Deer numbers wandering through the area!!!
Locally, once you get away from town and local farms, the Deer numbers back in the bush up the logging roads have been thinned out considerably. Popular opinion is the wolves have swung the pendulum to that end. I live in the middle of town and the following and their 'relatives' are frequent visitors to my back yard.

Locally, nowhere near the numbers I saw in Esquimalt, however, perhaps a sign wildlife is taking over. I've even had Ducks land on my roof!!

I know it been a warm dry summer, but Ducks landing on my roof???

One more;).
Once the Deer left, Mr. Duck brought the wife for a lower level look at the 'real estate':p.

Then,Laugh2 checking out what the neighbour across the street has available.

Just about hit 2 with my truck on the way to go hunting yesterday morning, but thats fairly common. I usually either see them in my driveway when i'm loading up, or on the rural roads on the way to bush, then not see anything all day. When i get home they are in my yard taunting me...

In every city there are a lot more deer than people realize. Small towns, too. There was a "town area only" hunt in Killarny (might be another town) Mb, and on the east side of Manitoba, there's the town of Pinawa. A community built to serve the nuclear research mine in the area. A lot of eddycated folks who weren't into hunting, got into office, and put a ban on hunting deer in the area around Pinawa.

If you want to grow a garden in Pinawa, it has to be inside an 8' tall fence, otherwise it gets eaten pdq.

Like DILLIGAF, you could hunt 'em with a knife. I was able to get within knifing distance in a parking lot by feeding snak pacs to a doe and fawn one winter. The Gf's daughter thought it was pretty cool to get that close.

A few years ago, I read an article about bowhunting in the Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota city limits. Hunters had to prove proficiency, and get written permission, but could hunt vacant lots, etc. It was WAY cheaper than sending out SWAT members to "hunt" deer. The meat got donated to soup kitchens if memory serves correct.

I have no problem with a proficiency test to be able to allow hunting inside city limits. The real kicker is what do you say when a deer with an arrow in it runs onto a playground, and dies in the middle of a soccer game?

nice pics!
I think blacktails are my favorite deer for the table and I really enjoy hunting them in the mountains. They are so sneaky hehehe
cool to see them doing well in the urban areas.

There are some nice bucks in Victoria. I used to live in family housing at UVIC and you would often wake up to the sound of a deer eating under your open window.

Island deer are really easy to hit, but not worth it, so small you wreck most of the meat...

I've got a 'few' over the years, and with the odd exception, I don't recall losing any great amount of meat. Choose your shots, as much as reasonably possible and it shouldn't be a problem, unless perhaps you're shooting end for end and using a cannon.

My parents used to have some real nice bucks come out of the bush behind their house to raid their flower gardens in Nanaimo. I'll have to go looking for some pics to post. My mother found the best solution after trying every method recommended to save her plants was to leave out a few apples. Seemed they never bothered with her landscaping plants after she started them on apples. I was there visiting at X-Mas one time and a little buck came right up to the back door and looked in the kitchen window. I said hey look at the Blacktail coming to dinner. My Dad said must be feeding time, got up took an apple out of a bowl on the counter, opened the door and placed the apple on the step. As soon as he closed the door the deer stepped forward, grabbed the apple and stsrted munching. Lol

I think he was planning on using his half ton!

Those are probably the best two pics I've seen of deer here. I work all over Victoria and notice the deer to be scroney and small. I know alot of people kick up a fuss about them eating there plants. I could not give two chits. I enjoy driving around and seeing them around town. Kind of neat IMO
