The 2010 THIRD Victoria M14 Seminar will be held Sunday, Oct 31, at the upcoming Victoria 2 day gun show, Sat, Oct 30 & Sun, Oct 31.

LOCATION: Saanich Fairgrounds, RCMP building, 1528 Stelly's Crossroad

TIME: Sunday, Oct 31, facilities are open 9:00 AM till 3:00 pm,
M14 seminar 10:00 AM till 3:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to show up early Sunday morning, stop by my table, get some one on one M 14 advice ... and maybe even buy something?

COST: entrance to the gun show, $ 5,
M14 Seminar fees, $ 30

NO LIVE AMMO IN THE CLASS ROOM SESSION

The time allocated for the HANDS ON CLASS ROOM PART of the seminar, should be more than enough to go over the basics again in class. I will have receiver wrench, barrel vice, head space gages, and other tools to share ... but this is after all a DO IT YOURSELF course, so be prepared to do your own work, on your own M14. There should be plenty of time for everyone to do barrel changes, re-indexing, lapping in of GI bolts, scope mounting, and whatever other tweaks and tricks desired.

NOTE: This seminar is an INDEPENDENT event, and is NOT affiliated with VIACA [ Vancouver Island Arms Collectors Association ]. Nor is it affiliated with the West Coast M14 Seminars put on by Thomas/M14Doctor. This seminar will be facilitated by Lazerus2000, and every participant is also expected to contribute to the ongoing dialog, sharing their experience [ or lack thereof ] with the M14 type rifles.

Bring your M14, or if you don’t have a 14 yet, bring yourself, your questions, any M14 tools or parts you do have, and anything M14 related you want to sell or trade. This IS a gunshow …. there will be things to buy/sell/trade.

PLEASE NOTE HOWEVER,
VIACA show SAFETY rules mandate that:

1.] NO AMMUNITION WHATSOEVER IS ALLOWED AT THE SEMINAR!!!!! Consider the seminar tables as if they were the SAFE ZONE at an IPSC Match.
SO,
NO live rounds, no dummy rounds, nothing at all that even looks like ammunition.

2.] All firearms handling will be done with the muzzle pointed in the designated safe direction.

Attendees: anyone with an interest in the M14 type rifles, no experience required, however attendance is limited to EIGHT, which is about all we can sit comfortably at 16’ of table length

SIGN UP: reply by CGN PM to – Lazerus2000, and PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR PERSONAL E-MAIL ADDRESS, as the course material is too large to go by CGN Personal Message.

NOTE: The updated course material will be e-mailed to confirmed attendees,
So as to not waste time on subjects covered by the course material,
PLEASE READ THIS MATERIAL IN ADVANCE!

The option of shortening their M14 barrels is available only to local Victoria/ Vancouver Island residents who sign up for the seminar, and who can get their rifles to me with enough lead time.

If they get their M14 rifles to me well before the seminar, I can take off their barrels and take them over to Dlask's in Vancouver. Then we can reinstall and reindex the shortened barrels at the seminar.

At last years seminar, we did 5 shortie barrels as a batch.

This year, so far no one attending the seminar has chosen the shorty option, and the lead time is getting very close to expiring. I am planning on a trip to Vancouver next week, and after that, the shorty option will not be available at the Seminar.

Not yet ....
but we might have some tantalising glimpses at a few accessories we are working on that are part of the over all munimula stock project.

Just back from Vancouver,
got another M14 barrel shortened by Dlask, and picked up one of Bits of Pieces Gas Ring Front Sights.
Trying to decide if I should leave the parts in a pile till the seminar and assemble it there???

Also have a pre-production sample of our new M14 scope mount to show around for some feedback. Range testing has been positive, but other opinions are welcome.
see ya'll at the Victoria gun show,

too bad i dont have my car here for school i would love to go to a gun show.. i missed the m14 clinic in calgary this past summer too!!! :(

I will be bringing our NEW, INEXPENSIVE prototype M14 scope mount,
which will be much better than most of the other inexpensive M14 mounts.

This M14 scope mount is Gen 1 .... simple and strong.

Gen 11 will be SUPER Strong, for military grade applications.

Gen 111 will include a new type of front and rear Back Up Iron Sights, designed specifically for shorty M14s.

If Franks says it is OK,
I may also be bringing our prototype MUNIMULA M14 stock.

We will have the latest prototype of our new Munimula M14 stock at the show,
along with a TROY and a VLTOR M14 stock, and a sample of the LAZ 1 side folder, for people to fondle and compare weight, balance, and "ergonomics".

Many thanks to Laz2K!!!

Many thanks to Lazerus2000 for pulling together a fun and informative afternoon of hands-on M14 support in Victoria this afternoon. A nice as it is to live here on the Wet Coast, sometime you feel like you're on the outter fringe, cut of from all the stuff going on in the big towns. It's great to have a guy like Lazerus here on the Island to help answer the tough question and show us right from wrong (M14-wise, that is).

It was a small group of guys with guns and a lot of questions and curiosity. Lazerus helped us identify the good, the bad and the ugly of the M14 world. The group also got a great little demo on how to tighten up the front end of your rifle with just a few simple tools and NO extra parts or cash. Old school know-how trumps all!

Nice to meet all you guys. Cheers!

It was nice to see the diversity in this particular M14 seminar,
in both people and M14s.

The rifles ranging from a beautifully executed and very thoughtfully modified AKM CHOP MOD stocked shorty, on which Kevin had already addressed most of the shortcomings of the AKM design. When it comes to ergonomics and balance, and the op rod supported / free floating barrel design, I've always been a fan of the AKM stock. Especially if it meets Mr Chop Saw. However, the removal of way too many screws to strip the hand guard for cleaning, and the neccessity of re-zeroing the rifle after re-assembly, did not thrill me.

Kevin solved most of these issues with his AKM by simply throwing away the RATHER AWKWARD AND FLIMSY AKM scope mount removable section over the receiver, grinding away a bit of the top rail, and mounting one of the standard side mounting three point scope mounts. His AKM stocked M14 is still a pain to detail strip for cleaning, but the re-zeroing issue is eliminated. Looks good, and a LOT more practical than the original AKM design.
WELL DONE KEV!!!

Then we had Neil, who had ordered an ALL DRESSED M14 off of the CGN EE.
He picked one from Brobee, who did a fantastic job of building a HIGH END shorty, using all the best kit, and some top quality labor. I don't want to guess what this jewel would cost to duplicate.

Then we had the traditionalists, who love the look and feel of the LONG barrel and the wood stocks. It was beyond amazing to see what a LOT of love, and some Tung oil can do to SOME of the Chinese Mystery wood stocks.

However,
be warned,
WHIMIS does NOT approve of the original mystery Chinese oil finish [possibly rendered down from the fat of rats caught at the factory?] , so Rubber gloves and a face mask are recommended to anyone crazy enough to try and turn their Chinese wood stock into a thing of beauty.
[Actually, I HAVE seen a few VERY nice pieces of wood on some of the Chinese M14s, even a couple that looked like Cherry, but this would be a rarity, NOT the norm. ]

So, all in all a good time,
and we proved that a ,mall hammer, and the proper technique, can remove a flash hider that a BIG hammer could not.

I had fun, they had fun.
They learned a lot of new things about their boom sticks,
as we did some HANDS ON exploration of the mysteries of head space, bolt lug engagement, receiver bridge and bolt timing, what the Internal Gubbins of an M14 bolt REALLY looks like, etc.

And I even learned a few new tricks myself.

Maybe I will make this an annual event.
