Hey all.

Know this is a reloading question but I think my answers will come from here............

Anyone use Vihta Vuori powders and getting good results?

Is it temperature sensative?

Friend recommended the stuff for a 338 accuracy load and think I am gonna try some (165 I think?) and see what else may work for stuff like 223, 260, 308.

I tried VV N165 in my .338LM and found it had too much recoil, accurate enough. I didn't like it but found H1000, Retumbo, RL25 better.

I've also been interested in checking them out for .308..

There are so many powders out there that I doubt i'll ever get my head around all of them.

I use N130 in my .300 whisper and N133 in my .30 BR, I have settled on both as the most accurate to date in those cartridges. My .308 bench gun likes Varget.

I use VV N560 for my 338LM. By far the best I've ever used. Other than healthy doses of Varget for 223 and the 308 family..I use all VV stuff. The 500 series has more nitro, so you actually use a little less, for good vel. Very uniform..I have nothing but good to say...as long as you can find it..

Used N550 with heavy bullets in 308 Win. I gave some nice groups and velocities were good, but not as good as RL-17.

Used N540 with 155 Scenars. It did ok, but nothing cheaper and more commonly available powders couldn't do. Neither N550 nor N540 exhibited good temperature stability. But, these are double based powders, so that's kind of expected.

I have switched most of my rifle powders to VV. I use VV N140 in 6mm BR Norma and 6.5x47 Lapua of which I am very happy. I find this powder to be relatively insensitive to temperature change - I drop the load 0.2gn and switch from CCI 450 to BR4 when going from winter to summer loads.

I use VV N165 and VV N560 in 338LM. Single digit ES and sd can be achieved when doing ladder loads with 250 Scenars and Lockbase over VV N165. I have found better accuracy and 'cleaner shooting' through the brake when switching from US869. Quickload indicates that I am getting 100% burn in the barrel with both powders - not with 869 where I was experiencing 'grit' from the brake. VVN165 will push 200gn hornady over 3,300 ft/s using published load data. I have pushed Barnes 185s to 3500+ using this powder.

VVN170/570 is likely a better choice if shooting the 300s, although 165 shoots them fine - just not max velocity.

X2 I will pay double price for Lapua brass b/c it is 2 times better than run of the mill brass from other companies but refuse to pay double price for VW powders b/c they are no better and no worse than anything else on the market. My 2c.

I am experimenting with their powders in 9mm and .45 acp and they are the cleanest burning I have ever seen. I can imagine that their rifle powders will be similar in that way.

I played with N560 in a 6X47 Lapua and it was the best powder for the gun. That is why i chose, it, not because I have any affinity for any one powder over another.

I used N165 in a 6.5-284 because it worked best, but now on my present rifle H4350 works better, so that's what I use.

The only powders for which I have a prejudice, are Norma powders. You'd swear they were burning old tires. Filthiest bloody powders I've ever used.

Can one of you guys tell me where you get your VV powder from??? I've tried Higginson and Hirsh and ATRS nobody has any.... I need n320-n550.

Obtunded: What Norma powders have you found to be filthy?

I have been wanting to try some MRP in a few calibers based on Quickload predictions, and have heard tell that it is a higher quality version of Reloader 22.

Have you had any experiences with MRP?

We have a container of VihtaVuori powder arriving in Halifax early June this year. This, after 6 years work and considerable expense. Pricing wil be determined in about two weeks. We'll have all powders except for N170.

As far as performance, we invite each shooter to determine what works best. We do know that it will continue to be used by many world champions in many disciplines, as it produces consistent small groups cleanly in many applications.

Regards,

Peter
