Vihtavuori powder?

I'm going to chime in here. I have and use: N135, N140, N540, N150, N550, N160, N560, N165 & N170.
They are a bit more money, and that is the only downside.

The 100 series [single-base] rifle powders are clean, consistent and have good "manners" no silly pressure spikes or surprises.
The 500 series [double-base] are also very clean, consistent, and add energy for higher velocities at acceptable pressures.

I have found some superb applications with Vihtavuori powders [N165 in my 270 with the 140AB][N560 in my 260AI with Berger 140VLD][N140 in the 220 Swift with the 50BT]

One has to decide whether they can justify it themselves. I personally can.

Regards, Eagleye.

I've been looking into VV powders a lot lately, mostly due to the IMR and Hodgdon shortages, and you read time and time again that many folks swear by it, even in the M1A/M-14 and M1 Garand platforms (N140). A lot of reloaders echo Eagleye's views and, really, the only downside is cost. But, at the moment, cost disappears as a concern when you can't even find a reliable source of the cheaper 4064, 4895 or Varget!!!

I'm going to try N140 in all my milsurps this summer; here's hoping it's as good as its fans claim!!!

Every time I use VV powders the supply seems to dry up or a new importer is used, the powder is good but supply has historically been iffy at least around here.

I stopped at the Elmira Gun Club on Saturday to check out the Benchrest competition and I noticed a large number of guys using Vit powder.
There must be some upside to using it. I saw some very tight groups.

I was looking at some a WSS today. I didnt know they carried it. They didnt have the stuff I was looking at though....

I saw some data on some 130/133 and it seemed to be 200 fps faster then every other powder. That would be a plus in my books.

I have found also that during rapid strings of shooting guns are considerably 'cooler' when shooting VV powders in comparison to other brands in both pistols and rifles.

The Viht powder factory is no more unless a new buyer steps up.

Doesn't Lapua own VV?

On the topic of their powders, I use their N110 in my 500 S&W loads. I can't really talk much to it as I haven't used other powders yet. I'm currently running it as the recommended target loading according to the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition. It seems to be a good load, though it is hard to tell how clean it is as I get a lot of smoke from burning bullet lube. I'll probably get a good idea as to how it compares to other powders when I really start to experiment with loading recipes.

Cost is debatable, locally taxes in they work out to the same within pennies, it is 1kg containers(2.2lbs), and for example it takes 41.5grs of N160 in my 260 rem to reach the same speed as 44.5grs of H4831, now I can go to 4350 for a few grains less but its burn rate is faster and it shows on the brass and that costs money too.

Part of the fun of shooting and reloading is experimenting with new combinations...
