I have a pound of 3 n 38 and I want to find a load for 9mm with 147 gr campro plated bullets. The only loads I can find are 5.9 t0 6.5 gr. 6.0 gr gets the case 3/4 full and the load would be severely compressed. Has anyone have any knowledge with 9mm and 3N38?

I don't know about 3n38, but I load with N340 for 9mm with good results. For 124g and 115g loads all of them are compressed, and I have never had bulged cases/primers or non burnt powder down the barrel, that is through a jr carbine, as well as a H&k p30l v3 and a p2000, a S&W M&P9 and a sig p226. For the 124g loads I use 4.7g of powder and for the 115g loads I use 5.1g of powder, I cant remember seating depth for the 124g but for the 115g I seat to 1.119" OAL. Both are snappy and fairly accurate.

147 gr Hornady they have down for 6.3 start and 6.9 max. But omg, 1137 fps on a 147gr bullet is insane, so I wouldn't go near that load.

VV N310 is 3.4 grains on 147. This isn't published anywhere because you can double load the cartridge and get it to fit in.. so it's a hazard.

I've always been told open shooters use 3n38 so I never went near the stuff.

I would probably start at 3.0 or 3.1 grains on a gun I didn't like. :)

to give you an idea of 3N38 for 9mm, but mine is 9major,
8.6gr 3n38 / primer- small rifle
oal- 1.170 for the 124gr projectile, 1.150" for 121gr.
a little bit of a compress load, but still safe on my gun,
velocity- 1340fps for the 124gr, 1365fps for 121gr

3N38 is a very slow burning powder which is what makes it ideal for shooting in an open gun. I would highly suggest that you do not go below their suggested minimum as you could have a case detonation. There is a minimum for powders for a reason.

I agree, Very slow powder. If you go too low of a charge it's going to be very dirty also. Slow powders like this are better suited to high velocity loads.
Get a faster powder if you want low velocity loads
