It probably is one of the original .450 Nitro's, called cordite to distinguish it from the .450 B.P.
That's some pretty shoddy bullet performance from the .450. The majority of British loaded ammo used nickel bullet jackets, as opposed to the steel jackets that came about after the war. The exceptions would be the .350 & .416 Rigby that used steel jacketed solid bullets.

I noticed there are a couple of mentions of a "Hoxie" bullet, in .450 and 9mm Mannlicher.
For those of you who haven't heard of them, it was a company that would take an existing bullet and modify it by basically inserting a ball bearing in the nose. This would have been back WWI-'20's era. From the photos, it seems like the expansion was a little too explosive.
