Today we shot the last ORA Vintage Rifle match of the year. The weather Gods smiled and the rain held off until the prize giving, which was held in a very light drizzle.

We shot a Deliberate, Snap, Rapid and Mover at 100, 200 and 300 yards. This made for a long day. While we all enjoyed all the shooting, I think I was too long. In retrospect, we could cut the Rapid at each distance. The Rapid is not all that different than the Snap. This will save 30 rounds and 3 matches for the day.

Many brought more than one rifle with one better for rapid or better at longer range. It is tough to say which rifles did the best, but watching groups form on the targets in the butts, I noted the Lee Enfield #4s seemed to shoot impressively.

We were all delighted on how well we did at 200 yards. Then we remembered our 100 yard targets were all shot from the standing position. The target for all matches at all distances was the Fig. 11.

Here is a short video on YouTube.

Anyone interested in joining us next year for these shoots should PM me. I will put you on the mail list.

This type of event challenges shooting skills much more than it emphasises the accuracy of your rifle. When shooting standing at 100 yards for example, the challeneg is to release the trigger while the rifle is aimed somewhere near the middle of the target.

The SKS, hardly a tack driver, is plenty accurate for this match.

The #4 was probably the most common rifle used and seemed to get good results. Probably because of the weight and long sight radius. Some of the shooters are "vintage", too.

This was the best standing target I have ever seen shot. Snap shooting at 100 yards, standing, with a Norinco M4 topped with a 4X scope.

Those who came with thier buddy, father, son, etc. got to shoot with them and also to mark their targets. Marking is actually interesting if you know whose groups you are watching form.

It was a lot of fun, but yes I think it could be shortened and if so the rapid could be the one to go.

I'm a little disappointed that there was no award for tidiest brass pile, I was doing pretty good at the 200 yard range. :D

Here are a few more pics.

Thanks everyone, I hope to attend a few times next year.

It was fun! My shoulder is never going to be the same again as I took at least a dozen prone hits from that k98 right to the collar bone. There is a buttplate shaped area swelling right now cause this was my first time shooting prone. As for the matches, rapid is only a challenge if you are shooting a bolt action with a five rnd mag. I doubt it would be missed. Thanks much for organizing this!

Thanks to Jim, his RSO and whoever else may have had a hand in organizing this shoot.I am always amazed that more shooters don't take advantage of this opportunity. Many of us don't have the opportunity to shoot at longer ranges (200&300yds). Where else can you shoot at 3 sec. snap or moving targets? It is an opportunity to shoot on a military range with as close to military conditions/procedures as most civilians will ever have. Having some experience on both sides of that fence I would encourage anyone with an interest in milsurp rifles to give this a "shot" next year.

Thanks to Jim and his sidekick Bill as well as the RSO for a great day. The wind added an extra element to the offhand portion of the shoot. Lots of fun trying to hold on the centre with wind gusts coming over your left shoulder. Like Old Ranger, I can't believe more Gunnutz don't take advantage of these shoots. For someone like myself it is probably the only chance I will ever have to shoot on a military range and shoot at 300yds. Don't be intimidated and join the fun. I shot an SKS with surplus ammo and was suprised how well I did. We all know an SKS is hardly a tack driving precision rifle. Hope to make it out at least once again next year.

My legs are still sore from popping up and down like a jack in the box with the snap and mover targets, but it was fun! Can't wait till next year.

I agree that the match was kind of long - I stopped taking sighters near the end so I could have enough ammo left to finish the match. The idea of eliminating one stage at each range sounds OK, but maybe we can mix it up. I'd like to do at least one rapid stage since I find it more of a workout than the snaps.

ORA Vintage Shoot

I t was great getting a chance too shoot at 200 and 300 yards , day was long but well worth it , my only let down came with shooting the last relay of 200 yrds then the 1st of the 300 yrds back too back , it caused a heated barrel condition on my P 17 , resulting in smoke and bad point of aim during rapid and mover at 300 yrds , but then its 92 years old . GREAT DAY , THANKS TOO EVERY ONE ,

Glad I'm not the only one with sore legs!

Are you the guy that had the No.4 with the Parker Hale mount?

Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1 with an old Weaver K3 in Parker Hale mounts. I was on target 30. Were you the guy with the Mauser on 31?

I was on 29 with the No.4 and the M14. You were looking for a cheek piece for your No.4? If so Numrich has reproductions. I was trying to remember at the match where I'd seen them but couldn't.

I stomped around the housed all P.O'd for a week when the date got changed since I couldn't make this fall. All in all I only made it to one vintage shoot this year which is way to few.

I guess if something has to go, it would be the rapids for me too. That will work fine for the Frankin Mauser sniper I and developing loads for. Can't load from a charger clip so 10 in 45 would be a real trick.

Hopefully the shooting gods will shine a bit more for me next year and my schedule will let me to make it to all the vintage events. The more the merrier there Ganderite.
