The ORA organizes Vintage Rifle shoots at Camp Borden. The joy of using a military range is the ability to stage snap targets (3 second exposures) rapid fire (target up for 45 seconds) and the moving target (target walks about 20 feet per exposure).

Shooting is at 100, 200 and 300 yards. Each distance starts off with a prone, deliberate shoot with sighters, so rifles can be zeroed.

I use the "ambush" technique. I aim at something in the pit and wait for the target to walk into my sights, and touch off the round at what I think is the corect lead.

The lead (for me) is about 2" at 100 yards, 6" at 200 yards and about a foot at 300 yards. At 400 yards I shoot at the leading edge of the target.

It is important that the rifle has the correct wind zero so that the lead is the same in both directions of mover.

The next Vintage Shoot is on May 30 at Amiens Range. Any rifle is welcome. You do not have to be an ORA member. PM me for more info.

This is what the targets look like that we shoot at. The red plugs are in the bullet holes. This pair were shot standing at 100 yards. A snap (3 second exposures) and the mover.

That is me holding my scoped Russian SKS. It does not group quite as well as my old Norinco SKS.
