I'm going to scope an SAFN with a custom mount approximating the original scope mount, and was wondering which of the more recent (meaning affordable/findable) offerings would give the right 'look'?

Get yourself an older lower power K-series Weaver. They give that "vintage" look at a very affordable price.

They are usually under a hundred bucks (for a good one) adn less than 40 for a messed up one, and if you get a crappy one, Trace will usually bring it up to snuff for under a hundred as well.

I recently got an old Weaver K4 for $40 and they do indeed fit the bill. The older ones are metal tubes and a little 'boxier' looking than modern scopes. As much as I despise Ebay, cheap Weaver scopes are on there all the time.....

I'm thinking of the style without a rear 'bell' if you can picture it. Maybe even a shotgun scope?

Dave - what base/scope mount did you use? What calibre is your SAFN?

I'm making a scope mount, Rob - i's going to replicate the original. The SAFN is a Venny issue in 7x57.

As I understand it, the orignal mount slid on to the left side of the receiver?

That it does - the Egyptian issue (and Argie?) do not have the dovetail on the left receiver wall for a scope mount. I'm going to use a steel base that fits in the dovetail - then fab an aluminum mount that bolts to it.

This is the factory mount base as mfg. by Echo ...
