On Saturday, August the 7th., we had some Visitors at Virden, Mb. Tinman204 and his brother, Walter Sobchak decided to pack up a few toys and come to Virden to do a bit of shooting. Tinman204 also wanted to look at a 1907 Swedish M/96 rifle that he had located in Brandon, (that he bought) so the hour drive to Virden to visit with us was only natural.

This also gave us an opportunity to pack up a few toys of our own, and head for the range ourselves. Since Tinman and Walter had e-mailed us with a “wish list” of some rifles that they would like to shoot, it was possible to cater to most of their request, and then some.

To name a few, but not all of them, between all of us, there were 3 Swedish Mauser m/96 rifles, including Tinman204’s latest purchase. He and his Brother are now confirmed Swedish rifle fans after shooting them. Then we had a Swiss K-31, three Enfield M-1917 rifles including one of the late Gavin Tate’s target rifles, a couple of SKS, a Garand, assorted Carcanos, 2 italian Vetterlis –a rifle and a carbine, several Mausers of various types and vintages including a WWI 98 carbine and an 1888 Commission rifle, 3 Ross rifles, a WWI German Luger, a WWI .455 Colt revolver, and a couple of Twosteam’s black powder guns.

Initial shooting was done at 100 yards, and later moving back to 300 yards for a “Gong Show” where a 16 inch steel gong was used as the target for some friendly competition, and to see what some of these old Military rifles could do at that range. Some of the results were quite impressive.

Tinman204 shooting his newly acquired 1907 Swedish m/96 Mauser rifle. We actually had to clean the grease out of it on the range before it could be shot.

A happy Tinman 204. Four rounds at 100 yards with his new Swedish toy. The other target on the left was from another rifle.

At 100 yards, Twosteam lets loose a .69 calibre ball downrange at the steel gong. She actually hit it too.

Another happy face. Tinman 204 after hitting the 16 inch 300 yard gong, 4 out of 5 shots, using SMELLIE's HMS Canada Ross Mark III. Walter Sobchak did as well with a Mosin Nagant, once he found out where to hold.

A group photo. Left to right, Tinman204, Buffdog, Twosteam, Smellie and Walter Sobchak. Walter was making lunch, and had a BBQ going on the tailgate of the truck with Hamburgers, so we took a bit of time to relax near the end of the day. Those burgers and potato salad tasted good. (That boy is so big I think he should change his CGN name from Walter Sobchak to "Bear Defence.")

Altogether, it was a fun day, and will be thought of and remembered by all of us. The weather was pleasant, a lot of ammunition was shot downrange, we all had a good time, and we even educated a couple of shooters who wandered over from the pistol range, just how much fun shooting military rifles could be. They got to shoot a few rifles too.

What more could you ask for?

Wayne was shooting just fine, Outlaw.

We live in what the books call a "moderate continental" climate. In truth, that is just a name: they had to call it something.

Actually, we have heatwave, violent summers and shocking, ugly, nasty winters that make you think of Fumbulwinter.

Live here long enough and you become one of us.

And we can even drink Pepsi STRAIGHT: no need to water it down with Bourbon!

We're TOUGH!

smellie, wasn't it yesterday you guys shot? Wayne said the seventh, but the way it sounded a few days ago it would have been yesterday.
Finally, a timed pic on a tripod!! Got both Wayne and you. Good picture.

Yup, yesterday, the sevenTEENTH, which was my Brother's birthday.

Earlier shoot was July 6, which was my Dad's birthday.

Dad would have been 98, Robert 65. Sadly, neither made it.

But it was great shootin' both days.

Something for which to be thankful.

BTW, the 300 gong actually measures 12 inches.

It can hide behind a Garand battle sight.

Makes the thing hard to hit with a century-old rifle, but the Ross (now 100 yrs old, a preproduction rifle) and the Sparkbrook (116 yrs old) did it easily.

At 100, I think hitting it at all with a smoothbore Musket is just FINE.

Yes, it certainly is. As we well know, time passes by all to quickly. I shot my newest Swede M96 1943 FSR addition on the 15th. Darned thing is next to new as you can get. A sleeper on Gun Boards. Glad Wayne is not down here,
he would have been hot after it. LOL You may not know it, but he is a true friend and one of my main mentors with Swedes. Just a great person to know!!

What a great weekend we had! The shooting was fun yesterday but today the coffee and good conversation at twosteam's place was the cherry on top.

Twosteam generously let us crash at her place, and it was tough to leave but all good things must come to and end!

Thanks for letting us hang out at your little slice of heaven Jan!!

Here's a few shots from the range.

Here's my brother shooting an FSR target rifle that Buffdog brought, to say it was a bit nice is an understatement!

And it was an honor to have Buffdog shoot our new Swed! It meant a lot to me to get his expert opinion of the rifle as it's a gift for my special lady and I wanted to make sure it was good to go! I must add that Buffdog may be in his 70's but I'd hate to shoot against him in a match! The guy can shoot!

Thank you for having us out to the range guys! It really was an honor to shoot some of your toys!!

I will defer to SMELLIE if he says the Gong is actually 12 inches in diameter. I thought it was 16 inches, but have not measured it.

I did some shooting, but mostly spent a lot of time on the spotting scope, assisting with SMELLIE in showing the guys the proper way to operate some of the toys, and acting as R.O. for our group to make sure all Range and Safety Rules were observed. (We did fire the Ross rifles, but we left no smoking craters on the range, and no shooters were harmed during the shoot by exploding Ross rifles.)

The m/96 Swedish rifle that Tinman204 had bought just that morning still had the grease in the action and bore. We actually had to clean it up while we were on the range, so we could shoot it. It is a fine shooter, and he will probably have to buy another one when Lauren gets her hands on this one and shoots it.

I had sort of forgot Steve's performance with SMELLIE's Sparkbrook sporterized rifle. He shot five rounds at the 300 yard gong and hit it all five times. Then he took another five rounds and shot at the gong again -hitting it another four times. Great shooting with a rifle that was over 100 years old, and had open sights on it.

Of course, there was the usual Brotherly Rivalry present, and good natured comments and remarks all around. Us "old farts" had a good time too, and it was a pleasure having the guys come for a visit, and spend some time on the range with them.

i wish i lived closer to the range, its so nice there and the company is even better, i need to get out shooting, soon! with so many projects, work, and harvest around the corner, it will be December by time i get to get out!! Nice looking swede steve!

Steve, you and Mike from SRF are the main reasons I've gotten into Swedes in the first place. I have a few milsurps and modern offerings as well, yet my favourite lady is still my 1901 FSR CG m96. She shoots like a lazer. Too bad I wasn't closer to you or the Manitoba boys. I'm sure I could learn a bit more!

Smellie's sparkbrook was by far the biggest surprise of the day! I picked it up off of the table and fed it some of my hand loads. That thing slammed the target with ease!!

117 years young and still a very accurate rifle!

These old guns never cease to amaze me!!

You are welcome, come sleep over anytime you like.
You two were fun!
(does the little lady know?)
