hey guys, looking for a new scope for the m14 and I'm debating between these two. I'm not looking to spend big buck (would like to keep it below 350$). Looking at XLT 6-18 or the crossfire 6-24 magnification. Would you guys go the Vortex or Bushnell route.

Thanks man. I was leaning towards the vortex as well. I was also considering the Vortex Diamondback 4-12. I would prefer a little more magnification than what the diamondback offers but it's priced a little lower than the crossfire.

So now, crossfire2 or diamondback 4-12?

I've got the diamondback 4-12 and it's ok, certainly a bit dark. I haven't seen what the glass looks like on the Crossfire2 yet but I would take a realistic look at the ranges you want to shoot with the gun. My preference in that price range, based on shooting 1-500 at the range (no hunting) is the Bushnell Elite fixed 10x40. The glass is quite decent for the money and having turrets is nice. Also the warranty is similar to the Vortex and I have had a Bushnell 10x replaced under warranty. Took a few weeks but sure enough they did live up to it.

I would think that any money you save there can go into a bit of accurizing on the platform, depending on what you have. I think the glass would cease to be the limiting factor.

Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I, like everyone else, will have a different one than your own.

I had a crossfire2 6-18 on my m305. Good scope, maybe Not the clearest at 18x
Switched to a cheap bushnell 3x9x40
Found 6x can be too much magnification, especially hunting. 3x9 is plenty for plinking and better for hunting.
The diamondback sounds about right

If you are going with cheaper glass then do not go for HUGE magnification. Magnification with cheap glass does not equal out to a great sight picture. stick with 3x9x40 or 4x12x50 or so. Less issues with darkness, cloudy sight picture and bad magnification clarity. For inexpensive glass also have a look at the Bushnell legend lineup. Decent glass at a bargain price. I have one on one of my cheaper guns(M305) and its decent

Diamondback 4-12ao. Have a Xfire 6-24x50, XLT 4-12 and the Diamondback. The Xfire isn't as bright, has a slight yellow tinge. Easy to live with. The Trophy XLT and Diamondback are very similar, both very good scopes. My DB is on a CZ 452 FS, the XLT is on a CIL/ Anschutz 310, neither will beat up a scope.

Crossfire2~I love Vortex, but I had one of these and it failed about 20 shots in. Vortex took it back, I traded-up to a Diamondback 4-12 AO and never looked back. That was about a year and a half ago. I (personally) wouldn't trust a cheap scope in higher magnification to be any good. My experience has shown that you're better off with a lower-power scope with better glass. Every time.

To your question directly~I think the Bushnell would be better than the Crossfire2. What company would I rather deal with if the scope failed? Vortex~every time. I don't consider myself a scope "snob", but I'll personally never buy another Crossfire2. On an different note, I was in Bass Pro around Christmas time and noticed they have a line of their own scopes called "Oculus". The glass looked pretty bright/clear, but you can't tell too much about a scope indoors. Nice features like side focus on the model I was looking at/through. Might be worth considering as an entry-level option, especially if Bass Pro stands behind them for warranty service/replacement. (if req.)

Thanks for the input. Reason I ask is because I already have a crossfireII 1-4 V Brite on my Tavor and I really enjoy it. Nice and clear, good eye relief and holds zero no problem. I also use to own an XLT bushnell 3-9 on an old rem 742 and it also worked well. I might lean towards the Diamond back.

I bought a Vortex crossfire 2 6-18x44 and it looks pretty decent to me out to 300 yards, I've only had it on a .22 and a .223 so nothing to beat it up.

side note: I was looking at spending more on the bigger tube 24X model but read somewhere that the parallax is actually only good at x18 anyways...

Not sure where your located and not that I am a fan of dealing with them in Saskatoon, but Wholesale Sports is clearing out all the Bushnell Elite stuff at a decent bargiN. Go in and have a look if you have a wholesale close to you. Its a step up from the Legend line and a definite step up from the Trophy or XLT

Yeah I saw the elite tactical on sale at wholesale for like 300$. The only thing is that its a 10x fixed and thats not really what im looking for.

Cabelas has a VIP event on today so im gonaa stop by after work and prob pick someting up. I'll prob end up going to wholesale tomorrow to see what they have. I can always return whatever I buy from Cabelas

I ended up going with the crossfire2 4-16x50. I wanted something with a little more magnification the what the Diamondback had to offer and I figured I just couldn't go wrong with the Vortex warranty. Plus Cabelas had a VIP thing tonight so the scope only ran 270$ which wasn't too bad.
