Well, I've narrowed my choice down to the Vortex. I was considering the Redfields, a few lower end bushnells and Burris and what not, but I like the warranty Vortex has and they have a service center in Canada. so lets just take the brand out of it completely and argue magnification. What would you guys pick and why?

I like the 2x rather than the 3x for quick sight picture, but obviously 9 is much better than 7x at the other end. I am thinking that 600m is the MAX for the m14 even being able to make use of the extra magnification anyways..

Damn. Why cant anyone just make a 1 - 8x scope? Well I guess SOMEONE does, but not at the same price point as the diamond back.

Thanks everyone...

I had red field 2-7 on mine sold it and bought a vortex pst 2.5-10. I had no problem with the mag range on the 2-7 I made the change because I wanted target turrets and a finer reticle as I am building a "DMR" type rifle. If I was going to limit the rifle to 500 and let's be honest that will cover 99.9% of all shooting I would go with a 1-4x beyond that the extra mag makes a difference. So in my opinion 1-4 for 50-500 10x if you want further 2-7 is a great do it all range. If your planning on shooting regularly past 500 don't cheap out on a scope a good one makes life so much easier.
